This invention relates to pencil-sharpening; devices and is an improvement upon the pencil-sharpeni11g device Shown in' Letters Patent- #648,S)00, dated lvlay l, 1900.
lt has for its object to provide a pcncllsharpeningr device with an improved adjustable stop arranged opposite the inner end of and in alinement with the pencil-receiving orifice and adapted to extend under the cntter, against which the end of the lead of the pencilis adapted to bear, to thereby limit the inward movement of the pencil while it isy being sharpened; also to provide improved means t'or adjustingV the stop axially;

rThe general construction of the pencilsharpening device is the AHaine as shown in the aforesaid patent. lt. comprises a stand A having a concave-convex or cup-like head and a foot said head haviuici,r an elongated bearing r1. A rotatable carrier is provided for the pencil or other object. to he sharpened or pointed, comprising a body-portion c, having at one end a journal-portion c". adapted to be Supported by the head A, and made long enough to extend through the elongated bearing of said head and to receive upon its outer end a crank C. Said body-portion c has at its opposite end a cylindrical port-ion c2, having a center hole extending' longitudinally through it, and into the body-portion for a considerable distance, to form a pencil-receiving orifice. Said body-portion is formed with a recess which intersects said side or face adapted to engage a portion of the pencil projecting beyond the perimeter.

The journal-portion c* is herein shown as formed with a. cylindrical hole through it longitudinally from end to end which is arranged in alinement with the pencil-receiving oritice, the inner end of said hole openinginto the recess in the body of the-carrier. A cylindrical bar f is contained in said hole which is made long enough to extend therethrough and to project therefrom at each end. The inner projeotingi` end of said bar is slalobed oil' at an angle oblique to the axiS of the carrier, or is shouldered, as at f', and its reduced end-portion thus formed extends beneath the cutter and terminates close to the inner end of the pencilreceiving orifice, and extends over the lcenter of said orifice so as to be engaged by the end of the lead of the pencil to be sharpened, serving as a stop therefor. The outer end of said bar is reduced in diameter and has arranged on its reduced portion a sleeve g, which is free to turn thereon, the end of the bar being upset or riveted to hold said sleeve in place. Said sleeve is externally screwthreaded to engage internal Screw-threads formed on the interior of the journal-portion, and is provided at its outer end with a lrnurled head by which it may be turned. Rotary movement of said sleeve acts to move the bar axially.
