HENRIETTA WERDEN, F MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK, 'ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO SARA L. COE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VENDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedSeptember 1, 1908, Serial No. 451,273.
. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in vending machines, and more particularly to coin controlling means therefor,-the object of the invention being to provide simple and eflicient devices for directing coins to the trip mechanism of the vending means and for detecting spurious tokens.
A. further object is to so construct the coin detecting means that a light-Weight or spurious coin or token will be prevented from reaching the trip mechanism ofthe vending means, and so that such coins or tokens will be thrown out of the machine.
With these objects in view the inventionconsists in certain novel features of construction andcombinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my improve ments. Fig. 2 is a plan view 0 the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View. Fig/1 is a view on the line 00-02 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line y-y of Fig. 1.
1 represents a face plate adapted to be secured in the opening of a suitable casing and to support the mechanism with said casing. inner side of the face plate'l and is made with an approximately triangular portion 3 and a vertically disposed portion 4. .This chute comprises a plate 5 having lugs 6 se cured to the face plate and plates 7 8 spaced from the triangular and the vertical portions of the plate 7. The chute is se cured to the face plate in such' position that its upper edge 9 will be inclined and at the upper edges of the respective members of the chute, flanged trackways 10-11 are secured and the flangps of these trackways are spaced apart a su cient distance to permit a proper coin to slide neatly between them upon the trackways. The trackways 10-11 are so disposed thatthey willbe inclined laterally and this lateral inclination will A coin chute? is secured to the facilitate the dropping of a spurious coin or token of less than the width of the proper coin, between the members of the chute in the triangular portion thereof and be directed by said triangular portion of the chute (the lower part of the back of which is closed) to a coin discharge outlet 12 in the face plate, and thus such narrow coins or tokens will be thrown, out of the machine.
The upper portion'of the face plate is provided with a coin inlet slot 13 and behind this slot a housing 1 1 to receive the coin is located. With the bottom of this housing, a curved chute communicates so as to'rcceive the coin as it drops from said housing. In its passage through the chute 15 the coin ,will be turned and delivered flatwise onto the trackways 10--11. When the coin is inserted through the slot 13 it will operate to set the vending means through the medium of an arm 16 and a bar 17, but as these features form no part of my present invention a further description of them here is unnecessary. As the coin slides down the incline trackways 1011 it will pass the closed rear part of the triangular port-ion of the chute and will engage a curved guide plate 18 at the lower end of the trackways. One of the trackways (11) is cut away at its lower end so that when the coin engages the curved plate 18 it will be turned and guided downwardly by said plate and by a curved flange 19 below and at right angles to said curved plate and caused to enter a pivoted trough 20 into which it is properly guided by a flange 21 projecting upwardly from one edge of said trough. The trough 20 is pivotally supported between its ends and is normall maintained in position so that one end sha i be directly under the lower end of the trackways to receive a coin from the latter, by
means of an adjustable weight 22 on an arm 23 secured to said trough. This weighted arm also maintains the pivoted or rocking trough in such position that its rear end will communicate with a guideway 23* leading tothe triangular portion of the chute. The weight 22 will be so adjusted thatwhen a proper coin drops from the trackways and enters one end of the trough, it will overbalance said weight andso tilt the trough as to discharge the coin into the vertical portion 4 of the coin chute. In order to insure the proper entrance of the coin into the portion 4: of the chute, the latter is pr0- vided with an extension 24, the upper edges of which are made slightly flaring. A big 25 projects rearwardly from the lower part of the curved plate 18 and serves to prevent lateral displacement of a coin as it passes from the trackways to the rocking trough. The portion 4 of the coin chute is slotted as shown at 26 for the passage of an arm on a trip lever 27. This trip lever is weighted at one end. and provided at an intermediate point with a dog 28 to be engaged by one or another of arms 29 connected with the vendtrough to rock so as to discharge the coin into the vertical portion I of the coin chute. As the coin drops downwardly from the rocking trough it will engage the arm of the trip lever which projects through the slot 26 and tilt said trip lever so as to release the operating mechanism of the vending means. Should a coin or token of less weight than is sufiicient to tilt the rocking trough, be inserted into the machine, such coin or token will pass through the rocking trough without tilting the latter and 'will be directed into the triangular portion of the coin chute by which it will be discharged from the machine through the slot 12. In order to maintain the rocking trough in its normal position so that light weight coins or tokens will be discharged therefrom into the portion 2 of the coin chute, a stop 31 is provided to be engaged by the flange 21 on the rocking trough.
Various slight changes in the details of construction might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or limiting its scope and henceI do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. In a coin operated machine, the combination with a coin chute having a part for the reception and discharge of proper coins and a part for the reception and discharge of spurious or light weight coins or tokens, and an inclined trackway disposed over said chute and adapted to discharge coins or tokens thereinto, of a counterweighted rockthe chute, and means for turning a coin as it leaves the trackway and for discharglng said coin edgewise into said rocking trough. 1
2. In a coin operated machine, the combination with a coin chute having a part for the reception and discharge of a proper coin and a part for the reception and discharge of spurious or light weight coins or tokens, and an inclined trackway over said coin chute and adapted to communicate with the latter, of a rocking counterweighted trough disposed under the lower end of said trackway and adapted to communicate with one or the other art of said chute, means for turning a coin as it leaves the lower end of the trackway and for depositing said coin edgewise into said rocking trough, a flange on the rocking trough to prevent lateral displacement of the coin in one direction and a flange at the end of the trackway to prevent lateral displacement of the coin in the other direction.
3. In a coin operated machine, the combination with a coin chute having parts for the reception and discharge of proper coins and of spurious and light wei htcoins or tokens, and trackways incline longitudinally and transversely over said chute and spaced apart from end to end over the parts of the chute and adapted to discharge small sized coins into one part of the chute, of means interposed between said trackway and. the two parts of the chute for control ling the passage of coins or tokens into one part or the other of the chute according to the weight of said coins or tokens.
4. In a coin operated machine, the combination with a coin chute having parts to receive and discharge proper coins and .spurious or light coins or tokens respectively, and inclined trackways over said coin chute Y and adapted to communicate therewith, of
a curvedchute constructed and adapted to receive a coin inserted into themachine, to turn said coin and to discharge it flatwise upon the upper end of said inclined trackways, and means interposed between the lower end of said inclined trackways and the two parts of the first mentioned chute and adapted to detect light weight coins or tokens.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
