CLEVIS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HITZERT, citizen of the United States, residing. at Onaway, in the county of Presque Isle and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to clevises, and consists in the strong, safe and easily opened clevis hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the clevis constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised as the same appears when closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the clevis as open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view illustrating the preferred hinge connection between the major members of the clevis. Fig. A is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, showing the manner in which the ring or minor member of the clevis is retained on the upstanding end portion of one major member by the swell of the latter.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:
A and B are the major members of my novel clevis, and G is the ring or minor member.
The major member A is of general rightangle form, and comprises a horizontal arm or, having a bifurcated and apertured portion 6 at its inner end, and'an upright arm or portion 0 which rises from the opposite or outer end of arm a and is provided on its rear side, adjacent its upper end, with a swell cl, best shown in Fig. 4. I would also have it here understood that I prefer to make the arm 0 of circular form in crosssection so that it can be pivoted in a device to be drawn, and that I also prefer to provide said arm near its upper end with a v transverse aperture 6, the latter to receive a retaining pin (not shown) when it is deemed necessary or desirable to employ the same.
The major member B is of general U- shape, and has a lower comparatively short arm f, an upper arm 9 which terminates at its rear end in an eye it, and a forward big'ht i, the latter for the connection of a draft appliance. As will be noted by comparison of Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 14,. 1910, Application filed February 18, 1910.

Figs. 1 and 2 the sides of the bifurcated por- 'pivotally connected to the sides of the portion Z); the pivotal connection being effected through the medium of a rivet D the ends of which are countersunk in the sides of the bifurcated portion 6 as best shown in Fig. 3.
It will also be noted that the sides of the bifurcated portion 6 and the terminal j are of general circular form, and that the hinge connection described is, as a whole, strong and durable and well adapted to withstand the strains placed upon it.
The ring or minor member C of the clevis is pivoted in the eye it of major member B, and is therefore adapted to be swung on and ofi the upstanding arm 0 of major member B. Said ring C is also adapted to be pressed down over the swell d and retained against casual upward movement by the same. When, however, the ring 0 is crowded upward past the swell ol, the member B is re leased from the upstanding arm of member A, and may then be swung to a position at right angles to member A, as shown in Fig. 2, to permit of the ready connection of a draft appliance (not shown). Then after the connection of the draft appliance, the member B may be restored to the working position shown in Fig. 1 and retained in such position by the engagement of the ring C with the arm 0 of member A.
While I have shown and described one form of my invention, it is to be understood that I am not limited to the details or the form or relative arrangement of parts disclosed, but that modifications may be made therein, without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
1. The combination in a clevis, of a major member, of general right-angle form, having a horizontal arm the inner portion of which is increased in width and bifurcated, and also having an upstanding arm, of circular form in cross-section, and a swell on the rear side of said arm adjacent the upper end thereof; a major member, of general U-form, having a comparatively short lower arm and a wide terminal thereon interposed between and pivoted to the sides of the said bifurcated portion, and also having a forward bight and an upper arm which terminates at its rear end in a horizontallydisposed eye; and a ring pivoted in said eye and movable on and off the upright arm of thei angular member, substantially as speci- 2. The combination in a clevis, of a major member, of general right-angle form, having a horizontal arm and also having a rear upstanding arm and a swell on the rear side of said arm adjacent the upper end thereof; a major member, of general U-form, having a lower arm hinged to the horizontal arm of the first-named member and also having a forward bight and an upper arm, and a ring pivoted to said upper arm and movable on and off the upright arm of the firstnamed member.
3. The combination in a clevis, of a major member, of general right-angle form, having a horizontal arm and also having a rear upstanding arm on said horizontal arm; a major member, of general U-form, having a lower arm connected by a vertical hinge to the horizontal arm of the first major member, whereby the second major member is enabled to swing horizontally on the first major member, and also having a forward bight and an upper arm; and a ring pivoted to said upper arm and movable vertically on and off the upright arm of the first major member.
4:. The combination in a clevis, of a major member having an upstanding arm and also having an arm that reaches forwardly from said upstanding arm; a major member connected by a vertical hinge to the forward end of the forwardly reaching arm of the first major member, whereby the second major member is enabled to swing horizontally on the first major member, and also having a forward bight and an upper arm directed rearwardly from said bight; and detachable connecting means pivoted to said upper arm and movable vertically on and off the upstanding arm of the first major member.
