  • My invention is an improvement in water jacket construction for furnaces, andl is designed to provide particularly an improved stay or support between the jacket head and tire sheet. Stays are common in this location to stiifen the jacket, but so far as I am aware it has been customary to use an angle iron riveted to the outer head with the inner extension simply bearing against the inner head and unattached. In my improved construction, made the subject of this applica t-ion, I rivet the angle iron to the outer head and weld the edge of the stay to the inner head.

STAY OR SUPPORT FOR WATER-JACKETS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL IV. TRAYLOR, citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays or Supports for VaterJackets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in water jacket construction for furnaces, andl is designed to provide particularly an improved stay or support between the jacket head and tire sheet. Stays are common in this location to stiifen the jacket, but so far as I am aware it has been customary to use an angle iron riveted to the outer head with the inner extension simply bearing against the inner head and unattached. In my improved construction, made the subject of this applica t-ion, I rivet the angle iron to the outer head and weld the edge of the stay to the inner head.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a water jacket section in elevation, while Fig. 2 is a section through the same.
The stays or supports are of angle iron, indicated at A, the angle extension being riveted to the outer head in the ordinary manner. Instead of the inner extension of the stay bearing loosely against the inner head, I weld this securely in place by forming Specification of Letters Patent.

Openings through the inner shell or fire sheet and then build up solidly through the opening or openings with new metal contacting with the exposed edge of the stay or angle iron, and filling up gradually until the opening is closed. This gives a very firm support to the sta-y and leaves the interior of the tire sheet perfectly plain.
`What I claim is:
l. In combination in a water jacket, an outer and an inner shell, and a metal strip constituting a stay set on edge between the shells, and having a riveted connection at one edge to one of the shells, and having its opposite edge welded to the other shell, substantially as described.
2. In combination in a water jacket, an outer and an inner shell, a metal strip constituting a stay set on edge between the shells, and riveted at one edge to one of the shells and having its opposite edge welded at intervals to the opposite shell, substantially as described.
