PLOW-COLTER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES R. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartow, county of Polk, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Colters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a plow colter and particularly to a shoe disposed at the front thereof to prevent the collection of weeds or other material upon the colter or its supporting standard.

The invention has for an object to provide a colter shoe extending upward and outward from the axial line of the colter at the front thereof so as to engage and deflect any material downward and beneath the center of the colter wheel so that it may be cut thereby and clogging by weeds or other debris prevented.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.

In the drawing-Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the invention applied to a plow; Fig. 2 is a plan of the colter and shoe; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the shoe.

Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.

The numeral 10 indicates a plow share of any desired construction which is suitably supported from the beam 11 and provided with handles 12. Extending downward from the beam at the front of the plow share is a standard 13, preferably rigidly secured to the share and provided at its lower end with an oifset portion 14 upon which the supporting frame 15 for the colter wheel 16 is pivotally mounted. This frame extends at opposite sides of said wheel and carries the bearings 17 therefor.

Extended from the front of the frame 15 is a shoe 18 which is formed at its inner end with bifurcated portions 19 secured to the sides of the frame 15 by any suitable means, for instance bolts or rivets 20 as shown. This shoe is preferably curved and extends downward beneath the standard 13 as shown at 21 and thence upward at the front of said standard. The shoe is formed of sufiicient width to prevent the clogging of the stand ard or colter by weeds or other material which may be encountered by the plow.

In the operation of the invention, it will be seen that Weeds, trash or other material is forced downward by the shoe so as to pass beneath the colter and may be cut thereby, while the collection of such material by the standard of the colter is prevented and the choking or clogging of the colter, which pushes the plow out of the ground, is avoided. The shoe provides a simple, eflicient and economical construction adapted to be formed in a single piece and readily applicable to the ordinary forms of colter now in use.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a supporting standard, a colter frame mounted thereon, a colter carried by said frame, and a colter shoe comprising a curved plate extended downward beneath said standard and upward at the front thereof and having bifurcated arms twisted at an angle to said portion and secured to said frame.
