IMPROVD CATCH-BASIN FOR SEWERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES J. LYON, of Cincinnati,v Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Catch-Basins for Sewers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a suciently full, clear, and exact description thereof, to enable one skilled in the'artto which-my invention appertains, to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication.
My invention consists in the provision andV attachment of a discharge or drain-pipe to the street-gutter at a short distance from the mouth of the catch-basin, which pipe communicates with the discharge of the catchbasin trap, for the purpose of forming a direct permitted to enter. The provision of the said pipe, the cap of which is openedat this time and closed at all others, thus preventing the necessity of damming the gutters or'otherwise stopping or diverting the curu rent before the basin can be cleaned.
In thc accompanying drawings- Fignre l is a plan, partly in section, of a street-corner catch-basin and connections, embodying myirk vent-ion.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same' through A is an ordinary catch-basin, of which B is Vthe cap of the opening, through which it is cleaned;
C, the trap D, the dischargepipe leading to the main sewer; and
E, the inlet or mouth of the basin.
When desirable to clean the basin, which is very frequent, it is necessary that no water be permitted to How in during the time it is being cleaned. In order to divert the current of water in the gutters during this time, it has always been customary to dam the gutter on each side of the basin, the dams being I?, which cminects with the gutter near the `mouth of the basin, in the manner shown at a, and communicates with the discharge from thc catch-basin, the` connection being made (in ordcr to avoid unnecessary expense) to the pipe D, as shown, close to 1the trap C, thus forming a direct communication between .the gutter and the sewer.-
The pipe F is fitted with a cap or cover, 'f, hinged or otherwise, which is only opened when the basin is being cleaned. To prevent water flowing into, the mouth of the basin while cleaning, a board is -placed before the opening and plastered np with a handful or two of dirt.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- In connect-ion with` a .sewer catch-basin, constructed substantially as described, the provision and attachmentof the pipe F j, arranged and operating as and for the purpose described.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
JAMES JL LYON.
