ROAD-SCRAPER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 8, 1909.
Fatented May 31, 1910.
Serial No. 532,101.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WIEOHELMAN,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Pine, in the county of Brown and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road scrapers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to rovide a road scraper of simple constructlon, which can be readily dumped at any time by moving a hand lever connected to a frame to which the road scraper is pivotally mounted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a road scraper having runner rods, connected to the bottom surface thereof, to permit the scraper to move freely over the ground and to prevent the wearing of the bottom thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a road scraper of simple construction, which can be readily dumped or discharged either from the front, side, or the rear side thereof whenever required.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a road scraper made in accordance with my. invention, said scraper being shown released and in position for dumping. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the scraper shovel showing the bottom thereof having the runners secured thereto, to prevent the wearing of the bottom of the shovel and to also provide means whereby the shovel may move freely over the ground.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the bottom of the scraper shovel, said shovel having integral sides 2, and an integral back 3. Curved runner rods 4 are secured to the bottom 1 of the scraper shovel by means of suitable rivets 5, said runners extending longitudinally of the bottom 1, and curved outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1 to prevent the wearing away of the bottom and to also permit the shovel to move freely over the ground. Connected to the sides 2 of the shovel are the bearing members 6, which at their central portions are spaced from the sides 2 of the shovel, said bearing members each having an opening 7 therein to receive a bolt 8. A draft bail 9 is pivotally mounted at its ends upon the bolts 8 and provided with a draft eye 10 at its forward end.
A U shaped metal frame 11 is pivotally mounted upon the bolts 8, said frame 11 being provided with eyes 12 through which the bolts 8 pass. The frame 11 is provided with a cross bar 13 having a keeper 14: secured thereto. Extending through the keeper 14: is a spring bolt 15, said bolt having a beveled inner end 16. A spiral spring 17 surrounds the shank of the bolt 15, said spring hearing at one end against a suitable bar 18 extending across the frame 11. The shank of the bolt extends through an opening 19 in a suitable bar 18, and at the end of the shank of the bolt, an eye 20 is formed. A hook 21 is connected to the eye 20, said book being engaged with an L-shaped lever 22 pivoted at 23 to the outer bar of the frame 11.
Secured to the back 3 of the scraper shovel is a bolt keeper 24 beveled at its opposite ends as at 25 and 26, said keeper having a not-ch 27 therein to receive the beveled end 16 of the bolt 15. Below the notch 27 a projecting lip 28 is provided, which prevents the beveled end 16 of the bolt from riding into the notch from below.
Secured to the back 3 are the upwardly projecting braces 29, the upper ends of which are beveled as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: The scraper shovel may be drawn forward by means of the draft bail 9 and if desired the eye 10 may be connected to a cable or rope for elevating the shovel when it is required to dump its contents upon one side or the other of the road. Whenever it is desired to dump the contents of the shovel the lever 22 is pulled backward against the tension of the spring 17 to release the front end 16 of the bolt from the notch 27 of the bolt keeper. When the frame 11 is thrown down the bolt again engages the notch 27. The frame 11 may be used as a handle for guiding the shovel and whenever so used the bolt is disconnected from the keeper and thrown upward in the position shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention is simple in construction,
is strong and durable, cannot readily et out of order and can be quickly discharge of its contents whenever required.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A road scraper comprising a shovel, a draft bail pivotally connected to said shovel, a frame pivotally connected to said shovel, a keeper secured to the back of said shovel, a spring bolt connected to said frame to en gage said keeper, and a lever pivoted to the frame and connected to said bolt for operating the same to dump the contents of the shovel,
2. A road scraper comprising a shovel, a draft bail pivotally connected to said shovel, a U-shaped frame pivotally connected to said shovel, a keeper secured to the back of said shovel, a cross bar connected to said frame,
I a keeper connected to said cross bar, a bolt mounted in said keeper, a bar extending across said frame, through which said bolt extends, a spring encircling the bolt between the keeper and the bar, and a lever connected by a link to the bolt, said lever being pivoted to the frame and operable for releasing the shovel to discharge its contents.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
