Description

ISAAC H. GRAVES, OF SACRAMENTO CITY, CALIFCRNIA.
Letters Patent No. 95,794, dated October 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPARK-ARRESTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAc H. GRAVES, of Sacramento City, in the county of Sacramento, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters for Smoke-Stacks to Locomotives; and I do hereby declare that the fol- .lowing is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention is to provide an improved device for arresting the sparks issuing from locomotive-engines; and
It consists in the construction and arrangement of certainnbvel devices, whereby the cnders will be retained in the stack a sutlicient length of time to become extinguished before they are expelled or carried out by the blast, as`will be more fully described hereinafter. 'A j To do this I employ a triple system -of netting, placed at the top of the smoke-stack, and surrounding the interior of the stack with a casing, which exv tends below the top of the chimney.
Around the top of the lower net-work is a flange, and the whole system of net-work is held by frames -and angle-irons.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure here shown represents a sectional elevation of,a smoke-stack, with a chimneyof the ordinary construction. I
A is an inner casing, which extends below the top of the chimney, and isv attached to the smoke-stack by angle-irons or lugs' B, so that a space is formed around it. The object of the inner casing is to prevent the blast from striking the sparks and drawing them back.
To the upper netting C is attached a lower frame,
with net-work C', by means of angle-iron D.
' This frame is-oil less circumference than that `of the upper frame, and to the top is attached a bent flange, E, placed at an angle of about forty-five degrees, so that the top is contracted to the upper frame, and the lower edge is expanded to near the inner face of the smoke-stack. i
Both the frames'are provided with central''openings, and between the two is placed a diaphragm'of network, F, which extends about half way across the top of the stack.
This diaphragm is held between the -two frames by angle-irons G G, and covers the opening, yet leaving i space of about equal distance above -and below it, to be regulated by the set-screw or lifting-rod H.
In its operation, the products of combustion will be carried by the blast up through the lower opening, against the dish-shaped diaphragm,v and be defiected, passing up the lower netting, to the covered flange, where,by gravity and the force ofthe blast, be carried into the dish-shaped diaphragm, from whence they `are expelled, the distance of travel being so great, and the length of time consumed in making the circuit, will serve to completely deaden the spark. Some portion of the sparks, however, will be found to have fallen around the chimney; but the'quantity will not be large, and these can be removed at will.
Having thus described my spark-arrester.
What I claim, av d desire to s'ecureby Letters Patent, is f 1. The arrangement of the inner casing A, substantially as described. v
2. The combination of the ange E with the upper and lower net-work C Cf, substantially as described. 3. In combination with the lower and upper system of net-work, the central diaphragm F, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
I. H. GRAVES. [1.. s.]
Witnessesr C. W. M. SMITH, E. V. SUTTER.
