To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Jones F. JAQUET, citizen of the United States, residing at Hyattsville, in the county of Prince George and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Dashboards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vehicle dashboards, and more particularly to a foldable support for dash-boards, extending between the same and the body of a vehicle, whereby the dashboard may be swung to an angular position within the said body, in order to better protect with the aid of a waterproof blanket, the interior of the vehicle from water, and in order that the shafts may be raised to a substantially vertical position, when the vehicle is not in use.
The objects and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the following description, in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the complete attaching means, removed. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through the dashboard and a port-ion of the vehicle body. Fig. 4 is a similar view through my improved connection, removed. Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation of the dash-board attaching member removed, and, Fig. 6 is a similar view of the vehicle body attaching member.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the vehicle body and 13 represents the dash-board secured thereto by my improved support.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the dash-board B adjacent its lower longitudinal edge, and each end thereof, with a transverse opening, and reinforce the same by an apertured ring 1, coinciding with the said opening thereof, through which extends the projecting stud 2, extending from the shouldered portion 3 of the dash-board attaching member 4, said stud 2 being threaded for the reception of a nut 6 upon the outer surface of the said dash-board, which nut 6 serves to clamp against said dashboard, a hook member 7 opening downwardly, and also provided with an opening through which said stud 2 extends. The member 4 is provided with a central cut out portion forming spaced ears 9, having alined apertures 10, and with a transverse aperture 8 above said ears 9,,to which the side ears 11 at the lower end of lever 12, are pivotally secured by a pin 13.
Portion C of the vehicle body through which the body attached member 14 is mounted, is provided with a vertical opening, and with a socket plate 15, having a central bore and a central opening extending downwardly therethrough from said bore and communicating with the vertical body opening. Said socket plate is secured to said body by bolts 16.
The body attaching member 14 is adapted for insertion downwardly within the socket plate bore until its body portion rests upon the base of said bore with its reduced longitudinal extension 17 extending downwardly through said socket plate opening, and provided with a transverse opening 18 at its lower end, through which a pin 19 extends. Said member 14 is further provided with a cut out portion 20 in its body, and with a central extending ear 21 upon its upper end,
provided with a central transverse aperture 22, and adapted for engagement between the ears 9, of the dash-board attaching member 24, and said member 14 having the aperture 22, adapted to receive the transverse bolt 23 extending through the apertures 10 of the ears 9 to form a pivot for the movement of member 4, with respect to said member 12. The member 4 is provided with an angular depending extension 24, which in the posi tion shown in Fig. 4, extends downwardly in the cut out portion 20 of member 14, and within the bore of socket plate 15, thus preventing pivotal movement of member 4 until member 14 has been moved longitudinally and vertically to disengage said extension 24, from within said socket bore, which movement of member 12 is normally prevented by a coil spring 25, compressed between the transverse pin19 at the lower end of the extension 17 of member 14, and the internal base of the socket plate 15.
The handle or lever 12 has its lower side ears 11, extended sidewise to form cams 17 which, when said lever is rotated on its pivot 13 engage the socket plate 15, cause vertical movement of member 14 until extension 24 of member 4 is free of the socket plate bore, when said member 4 may be rotated upon its pivot 23 to swing the dash board 13 within the vehicle. In the position shown in dotted lines it will of course, be apparent that the shafts may be raised to a substantially vertical position.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said dash-board, comprising a member connected to said dash-board and provided with a portion forming a handle, a member vertically movable mounted upon said vehicle, said first named member being pivotally mounted upon said vertically movable member, means for normally holding sald members 1n a locked relation with each other, said means being releasable upon the movement of said vertically movable member, and means for securing said members to said vehicle.
2. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said dash-board, comprising a socket, a member :mounted to reciprocate therein, a member secured'to said dash-board and pivotally connected to said reciprocating member,
means for normally retaining said members in a rigid relation to each other, said means being releasable upon the movement of said reciprocating member, means for reciprocatingfsaid reciprocating member, to permit said second named member to be swung upon its pivot, and means for securing said socket upon said vehlcle, substantlally as described.
3. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said secured to said dash-board and pivotally confnected to said reciprocating member, means for normally retaining said members in a rigid relation to each other, said means being releasable upon the movement of said reciprocating member, a lever pivotally connected to said member secured to said dashboard and arranged to engage said socket and adapted to operate said reciprocating member to permit said second named member to be swung upon its pivot point, and means for securing said socket upon said vehicle, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said dash-board comprising a socket, a member mounted to reciprocate therein, a member secured to said dash-board and pivotally connected to said reciprocating member, means for normally retaining said members in a rigid relation to each other, said means being releasable upon the movement of said reciprocating member, means for moving said reciprocating member and adapted after said movement to swing said member secured to said dash-board upon its pivot, means for limiting the movement of said reciprocating member, and means for securing said socket upon said vehicle, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said dash-board, comprising a socket, a member mounted to reciprocate therein, a member secured to said dash-board and pivotally connected to said reciprocating member, said second named member being provided with a depending portion adapted to fit within said socket for preventing said second named member from normally swinging upon its pivot, means for moving said reciprocating member whereby said depending portion of said second named member may be moved "from within said socket and said second named member be swung upon its pivot point, and means for securing said socket upon said vehicle, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said dash-board comprising a socket, a member provided with a cut out portion mounted to reciprocate therein, a member secured to said dash-board and pivotally connected to said reciprocating member, said second named member being provided with a depending portion adapted to fit within said out out portion upon said reciprocating member, for normally holding said members in an interlocked engagement with each other, means for moving said reciprocating member whereby said depending portion of said second named member may be moved out of said cut out portion, upon said reciprocating member, and said second named member be swung upon its pivot point, and means for securing said socket to said vehicle, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a vehicle and its dash-board, of means for supporting said dash-board, comprising a support, a member movably mounted upon said support, a member secured to said dash-board movably mounted upon said first named member, means for normally holding said members in a rigid relation to each other, said means being releasable upon the movement of said first named member, means for moving said first named member, and means for securing said support upon said vehicle, substantially as described.
