Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs EDGAR WILDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an anchor and it has for its objects to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of an anchor constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an end eleva tion of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on the plane indicated by I the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view in side elevation of the lower portion of the shank of the anchor.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The shank 5 of the improved anchor is provided at a short distance from the lower end with a cross bar or cross head 6, below which the said shank is transversely notched to form a recess 7 affording a bearing for a rock shaft 8; the latter being secured in its bearing by means of a block 9 which is re tained within the recess 7 by means of suitable pins or fastening members 10. The shank has a shackle 11 connected with the upper end thereof in the customary manner. The shaft 8 is provided with terminal heads or enlargements 12 which may be of substantially square cross section; said heads being provided adjacent to the stem or shank with solid disks 18 having notches 14 for the accommodation of the ends of the cross head 6 whereby the rocking movement of the heads below the axis of the shaft 8 will be limited. It is obvious that by regulating the dimensions of the notches 14, the extent of the rocking or oscillatory movement of the anchor heads may be governed. Each of the heads 12 is provided with a massive upstanding fluke 15 which may be spear pointed as shown at 16; each head is also provided with massive barbs 17 extending in opposite directions from the bases of the flukes and substantially at right angles to the latter.
An anchor constructed as, herein described will be found extremely eflicient in operation, inasmuch as the flukes will engage the anchorage at a very effective angle while the barbs 17 which initially serve to support the fiukes at the desired inclination, will eventually themselves engage the anchorage and afford an extremely firm grip or hold.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In an anchor, a shank having a cross head and provided with a recess at its lower end, a fluke carrying shaft engaging said recess, a bearing block seated in the recess, and disks upon the fluke carrying shaft having notches engaging the cross head of the shank.
2. In an anchor, a shank having a cross head, a fluke carrying shaft supported for rotation adjacent to the cross head, and
notched cross head engaging disks upon the shaft.
3. In an anchor, a shank having a cross head, a shaft supported for rotation by the shank adjacent to the cross head, flukes extending upwardly from the shaft, barbs extending in opposite directions from the shaft adjacent to the bases of the flukes, and notched cross head engaging disks upon the fluke carrying shaft.
