Description
1UNITED S'rATns CHARLES PETERS, OE TRENTON, E'EYV JERSEY.
lMPROVElVENT iN MOLDS FOR UNlTlNG STEEL. TO CASTlRON.
Specillcation forming part of Letters Patent No. dated February S, 1F53.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHRLns In'rnns, of the city of Trenton, in the county ot' Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and Improved Case to Molds in which Steel or vWrought-Iron is to be Veldcd to Cast-Iron; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a solid basis of iron, brick, or other hard material to the mold, with an aperture therein of the shape ot' the steel or wroughtiron sought to be Welded7 and thus by means of the said aperture subjecting the steel or wrought-iron while inthe mold to the iire until the same is heated to a welding-heat.
To enable others skilled in the art to make use of my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My description and drawing relate to the casting of anvils with steel or wrought-iron faces, from which the application or' my in* vention to other articles will be readily understood.
I form abase for my mold or" iron, iiiebriclz, or other solid material the shape of the iiask required to mold the anvil. I then form an aperture in the said base the shape of the steel or wrought-iron face of the anvil, but somewhat smaller, so that the steel or wroughtiron will cover the aperture and be exposed on the under side of the case. I also have a rib surrounding the case of the thickness of the steel or wrought-iron face, so as to form a recess around said steel or wroughtiron. I have also set-screws and loops to retain the steel or wrought-iron in its place. I then daub the recess with molding-sand, so as to prevent the molten iron from passing around the edges of the steel or wrought-iron face and the screws and recess from getting heated. Upon this base thus formed I then build my mold, precisely as molders are accustomed to do, upon the ground. I then place the mold over a furnace level with the ground, so that the solid part of the base shall be on the ground and nothing but the steel or Wrought-iron face shall be exposed through the said apeature to the iire. Having obtained a Welding-heat I slide the mold ott' the tire onto a bed of sand, to prevent the steel or wrought-iron from burning. r)The molten iron is then poured into the mold in any of the modes practiced by founders. I thus dispense with the heating ot' the steel or wrought-iron face While out of the mold, and also with the formation of a new base for each cast-ing.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of a solid base to molds in which steel or wrought-iron is to be welded to cast iron, with an aperture in the same, so that by means thereof the said steel or wrought-iron can be subjected to the heat of the furnace While in the mold.
CHAS. PETERS.
