To all whom it mag concern:
l 3e 1t known that 1, CHARLES A. DARE, a citizen of the United .States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding- Machines, of which the following is a specification. 'My invention relates to improvements in adding machines, and my object is to provide a simple, inexpensive device of compact form for the convenience of bookkeepers, accountants, and the like, in adding columns of figures. 1
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on line 11-11 of Fig. 3. Fig section on line III-III of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 shows a tool for turning the addingwheels.
' In carrying out the invention, I employ a case-.1, having a beveled front side 2, so 1 that it may be employed as a ruler, said beveled side having a scale '3 whereby measurements may be taken.

33 designates a push-bar slidingly-mounted in the rear side of the case and a guide 34, Which'latter is adjacent the units wheel 4. Push-bar 33 is provided at 'its outer' end with a knob 35, and at its inner end with a pin 36, whichlatter is normally held in-en- 'gagement with guide 34 by a' 'ret'ractile spring 37 secured at its' ends to the back of the case and the push-bar. 'Push bar 33 is provided with a pivotally-mounted pawl 38 which is held in engagementwith' the ratchet-teeth of the units Wheel 4, by a spring 39. The upper part of case 1' is pro- 'vided with segmental :slots 40 to expose openings 10 in the adding-wheels, so that aipencil, or a tool 41 may beinserted into any of said openings for the purpose of turning said wheels. 'Tool 41 is provided with a pin 42 for entering any-of the openings 10, theentrance of: the pin being limited by a shoulder 43, which slides around upon the upper surface .of the case.. 1

This is accomplished by turning each wheel with the tool 41 in i the directionv of arrow at. Assuming that the first figure of a column to beadded 9 the point of the tool is inserted in the opening of the unitswheel opposite-f9 of the row 44, and the units wheel is. turned its until pin 42 contacts with the rear terminal of slot 40. This will bring the numeral. of the. units wheel into coincidence with its respective sight-opening L6. 'If the next figure to be added is 7, the point of the tool is inserted in the opening of the units wheel opposite 7 of row 4%, and the units wheel is turned until pin 42 contacts with the terminal 45 of slot 40. This operation will bring the numeral 6 on the unit's wheel into coincidence with the sight-opening 46. As the units wheel is turned its depending lug12 engages the lug 14: of the propellingarm 16 and pushes the same forward to the dotted position shown in Fig. 2, causing it to turn the tens wheel until its numeral 1 is brought into coincidence with its respective sight-opening 4:6. The two numerals thus disclosed equal the amount of the added numbers, which is 16. As the propellingarm-l6 moves forward, it actuates lever 26, and throws the free terminal of the same into the path of lug 13, so that when the units wheel is turned to add the numeral 7 said lug will engage the lever and re store it to normal position. As the lever moves back to normal position, it carries the propelling-arm 16 therewith. While the Wheels are free to rotate in the direction .of arrow a, they are held from backward rotation by the resilient arms 80, 31, and 32. At times it is inconvenient to actuate the adding-wheels with the tool 41, in which case the tool may be dispensed with and the operation of turning the adding-wheels be accomplished through the intermediacy of push-bar 33 and its pawl 38.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, what I claim is 1 An adding machine consisting of a case having slots in its top and sight-openings adjacent said slots, numerals arranged around said slots, a series of adding-wheels beneath the slots of increasing denominations from right to left and provided with rows of numerals correspondim to the numerals arranged around the slots, said adding-wheels being provided with peripheral ratchet-teeth, lugs on all the adding- Wheels but the one of highest denomination, propelling-arms 'slidingly-mounted in the case to transmit motion from a wheel of lower denomination to one of higher denomi nation, each arm being arranged in the path of a lug on one wheel and adjacent a ratchettooth of the following wheel, and levers engaging said arms to restore the same to normal said levers -being actuated by the lugs which actuate the propelling-arms.

An adding machine consisting of a case having slots in its topand sight-openlngs adjacent said slots, numerals arranged around said slots, a series of adding-wheels beneath the slots of increasing denominations from right to left and provided with rows of numerals corresponding to the numerals arranged around the slots, said adding-wheels being provided with peripheral ratchet-teeth, lugs on all the addingwhcels but the one of highest. denomination, propellingmrms slidingly-mounted iii the case to transmit motion from a wheel of lower denomination to one of higher dcnoniination, each arm being arranged in the path of a lug on one wheel and adjacent a ratchettooth of the following wheel, levers engaging said arms to restore the same to normal, said levers being actuated by the lugs which actuate the propelling-arms, and means engaging the ratchet-teeth to prevent backward rotation of the wheels.
3. An adding machine consisting of a case having slots in its top and sight-openings adjacent said slots, numerals arranged around said slots, a series of adding-wheels beneath the slots of increasing denominations from right to left and provided with rows of numerals corresponding to the numerals arranged around the slots, said adding-wheels being provided with peripheral ratchet-teeth, lugs on all the addingwheels but the one of highest denomination, propelling-arms slidingly-mounted in the case to transmit motion from a wheel of lower denomination to one of higher denomination, each arm being arranged in the path of a lug on one wheel and adjacent a ratchet-tooth of the following wheel, levers engaging said arms to restore the same to normal, said levers being actuated by the lugs which actuate the propelling-arms, and resilient arms engaging the ratchet-teeth to prevent backward rotation of the wheels.
4. An adding machine consisting of a case having segmental slots in its top and sightopenings adjacent said slots, numerals arranged around said slots, a series of addingwheels beneath the slots of increasing denominations from right to left and provided with rows of numerals corresponding to the numerals arranged around the slots, said adding-wheels being provided with ratchetteeth and circular rows of openings, lugs on all the adding-wheels but the one of highest denomination, propelling-arms slidinglymounted in the case to transmit motion from a wheel of lower denomination to one of higher denomination, each armbeing arranged in the path of a lug on one wheel and adjacent a ratchet-tooth of the following wheel, and levers engaging said arms to restore the same to normal, said levers being "actuated by the lugs which actuate the propelling-arms; in combination with a tool" having slots in its top and sight-openings adjacent said slots, numerals arranged around said slots, a series of adding-wheels beneath the slots of increasing denominations from right to left and provided with rows of numerals ,oorresponding to the 'liumerals arranged around the slots, said adding-wheels being provided with peripheral ratchet-teeth, lugs on all the addingwheels but the one of highest denomination,
