TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 30, 1908.
latented May ltd, i910. Serial No. 441,163.
Ll'o all wit-ecrit 1' may' concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY CRUTCHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in yonne, in thc county of Hudson and State of useful Improvements in Typedlriting Machines, of which the following is a specification. i
" This invention relaties to the platen-controlling 'devices of typewriting machines, and particularly to means ior releasing the platen .'t'ron'i the control ot' the usual line- Space Wheel, to permit tine adjustments of upon ruled lines, etc.
The principal object ot the invention is to provide an inexpensive, simple and easily operated loel betvveei'i the platen and the line-space wheel, which may be placed upon existing machines with a minimum of alter ation thereof.
.ln the preferred iorin ot' the invention, l provide the line-space wheel with a relatively large bore, to lit loosely upon a collar which is lined upon the platen axle. In the a small supple- `mental bore to receive a cam; one bore open# *inv laterally into the other, and th'e cam be large boro, or Iat least to hind upon the collar, with the el'ect of locking 'the line-space wheel andl collar together. YUpon the cani is directly secured or formed a handle, whereby it may be easily turned to release the lookw iVheI'i the cam is released, the platen maybe turned independently ot the limi-space wheel to any desired extent, and it. may then bc reloclted to the line-,space wheel, to be controlled thereby.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation ot a portion ot the platen and platen frame ol 'an Underwood front Strike nailing' machine, showing` my improvements applied tlioroto. Fig'. 2 is a diagram to illustrate the manner otc rcleasing the platen from the line-space Wheel.l Fig. 23 is an end elevatimi ot' thev platen frame, line-space wheel and platen releasing devices. Fig. l shows a perspective oll a hand wheel, Fig. 5 disk-like keeper, Fig.
6 a locking earn and its handle, llig. T a line-space Wheel provided with main and v supplen'iental bores, and Fig. 8 a platen and l platen axle, the latter provided with a collar to receive the line-space wheel.
lhe usual cylindrieal platen l is mounted for rotation by means of an `axle in' a platen frame tl. ...it toothed lincepace wheel Ll, to control the platen, is provided with a springpressed dctcnt; and line-by-linespaeingl ol' the platen is elllected by a pawlt carried upon a slide T, usual. The line-Space wheel has; a large main bore S to lit` loosely .upon a collar 9, the latter having a hub l0 by `which it is Secured upon the platen axle. 'll'it line-Space Wheel isgalso provided with a small diameter supplemental bore 1l, hat ing a lateral opening l2 into the main bore; both heroe being cylindrical, and so cut that. their niveauriferi-neva intereezt.
ln the Lsu'pplenicntal bereist, `titted a cam` to I Qi'otrude thrmiglrthe opening l2 into the main bore, or atv least' tov bear; 'upon any portion of the periphery of the collar t), as at Fight-l.. to lock the collar and line-space wheeli'togcther. The object of making` the eollvar S) oi' great diameter is to enable the saine to be gripped eli'cctually by the cam, or to `Lrive the can'ra strong purchase to prerent independent movement ot' the platen, The cam is preferably in the form of a cylindrical plug` 13 fillingl said supplemental bore il, and having a tlat or cutaway 14, to permit tree rotation of the collar 15) and thtl platen 1, whenihe cani .is turned to Fig. :2 position` cured a Alever or handle l5, extending,` alongside of the liue-space wheel, between tlu.`
latter and a hand-whcel vIt secured upon the cxtreme end of the platen axle; a fingerpiece 1T on said. level' projecting toward said hand-Wheel. i
The operator may grasp the hand-Wheel and easily touch the linger-piece 17 to Swing the cani-lever 15 from the Fig. .il to Fig. 2 position, and then by turning' the handwheel it rotate the platen -l to any desired po nt; and he may then press the tinger-piece li inwardly toward the axle 2, to
lock together the platen and 'line-Space Wheel again. This operation is eonveniently performed bythe operator at. any point to which the finger-piece 17 may be rotated in the usual operation of the machine..A The three parts 13, 8' and 9 become locked together by the movement of 15 from Upon the cam is formed or se.
the position at Fig. 2 to the position at Fie'. 3; the camming action of the. cam or dog 13 upon 9 serving to lock or hold V15% aud 15 against accidental platen-releasing movement. l
The line-space wheel is confined between a'keeper 18 and a flange 1E), the latter formed upon the collar on the platen side, and the former having the form ot' a. disk and sccured by screws 20 threaded into holes 21 in the tace of the collar. 'l`he keeper also confines the cam 13 against. the. tlange 19; the :am being provided with a recess Q2 to reA eeive the edge of said lkeeper.
Variations ma-y be resorted to within the scope ot' the invention.
