To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARoUs F. BRENNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjusters for Locomotive DriveBoxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in adjusters for locomotive drive boxes. At

present, when side play exists, it is necessary to remove the wheel from the locomotive, and attach face plates, to the wheel, and replace. This present invention obviates the necessity of so doing, and is intended to remedy side play in engine drive wheels, and it is equally applicable to engine truck wheels.

VVit-h these objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel. features of construct-ion and combinations of parts wh ch will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2 is a plan view, Fig. 3 is a. side view, Fig. 4: is a detached view of the liner, and Fig. 5 is an edge View of the liner. i

A, represents the usual box. This is mounted on the axle 1 in the usual manner and held in the connecting rod by wedges (not shown), which are inserted through the recesses at the ends.

B is the liner which takes all the wear off of the box. This is provided with lugs or studs 2, 2, preferably about five in number, adapted to enter corresponding orifices 3, 3, in the sides of the box, two or more set screws 5, 5, being employed preferably to retain it in place; the set screws engaging the lugs or studs when screwed in; and hence the liner is not only very simple and inexpensive, but easy to repiace when worn.

In the use of the invention, "all that is necessary to be done is to take out the wedges holding the box A in place, slip the box back on the axle, and then insert the liner I), and reset the box.

This driving box side play adjuster can be applied. to the drive boxes on any locomotive in use with little or no expense. The side play can with very little cost be taken up on drive wheels while in the round house, while lining wedges, without. removing any other parts. The liner takes all the wear from the side of the box, which will preserve the box and make it much more durable than heretofore. his liner requires very little machine work. and hence its original cost is practically its only cost.

It is evident that more or less slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without depart are from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a box, of a liner or adjuster having lugs or studs in one side adapted to enter corresponding recesses in the side of the box, whereby the liner is removably secured thereto, and set screws engaging the lugs or studs for removably retaining the a-d uster or liner in place.
