To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CORNELIUS Wnrss, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Flatbush, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Piling Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cloth handling machines and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.

In Letters Patent of the United States #937,398, granted to me October 19, 1909, I describe and claim a novel device of this kind comprising, in brief, a table, rails arranged on each side thereof, a carrier adapted to be moved on the rails on each side of the table, vertically adjustable brackets adapted to be supported from the carriers and to be moved above the table and transversely arranged cloth supporting devices secured to the brackets, whereby, as the carriers were moved, the cloth on such devices was moved with respect to the table and its ready manipulation was promoted. There is also described in said patent means for actuating the carriers and controlling such movement and for adjusting and arranging the parts and their connections.

The subject matter of this application was described in the application for Letters Patent hereinbefore mentioned and by a requirement of the Patent Oiiice was divided therefrom. It relates more particularly to means for handling the cloth so that it may face as desired when laid on the table irrespective of the direction in which the cloth support is moved.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the cloth support, some of the parts being shown in vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective on a smaller scale of the cloth support omitting the spindles.

In the drawings, 1 is a table having a number of legs or supports 2 along its sides to which are secured rail brackets 50 for the purpose of supporting upper channel rails 5 and lower channel rails 16.

to receive the depending stems 42 of brackets -10 which stems may be vertically adjusted in the sleeves and held in any position after adjustment by means of set screws 66. Cords or belts 9 are secured on each side of the carrier and are moved lengthwise of the table by any suitable device as, for instance, a motor actuated pulley (not shown). It is by this means that the carriers are moved along the table.

The brackets 40 which with their connections form the cloth support, are designed to carry two rolls of cloth and lay them so that the nap of the cloth will run the same way, as indicated by the arrows. Each bracket 40 is a T-shaped piece having hori zontal arms-41 and stem 42 provided with a slot 43 adapted to engage the set screw of the carrier 60. At the end of each of the horizontal arms ll of the T-sha-ped piece is a thumb nut and screw 44, each screw being adapted to engage in a slot a9 in the shank 48 of a spindle carrier 45 provided with a groove 16 forming an open bearing to receive a spindle 17, and a. set screw 47 to hold the spindle in place.

In some cases, it is necessary or convenient in handling the roll of cloth to turn it around, To facilitate such manipulation, there is provided a crosspiece 67 secured to the bracket 40 by bolts 68, or in any other convenient manner. Mounted on the cross piece is an upright 69 in which is remov ably secured a concave holder 71 mounted on a pivot secured to or made integral therewith and which pivot sets in a vertical recess in the upright 69 provided to receive it. hen it is desired to turn the goods, the operator, or more than one, if needed, lifts the spindle 17 on which the cloth is rolled out of the open bearings or grooves 46 of the spindle carriers 45 and places it on the holder 71 and turns it around and after so doing replaces it on the bearings again. The stem 42 of the bracket is graduated as indicated at 420 to assist in adjusting it accurately.

What I claim as new is 1. In a machine of the character described, a cloth supporting device, comprising two pairs of arms, a transverse spindle adapted to be carried between each pair, and means for adjusting the horizontal longitudinal position of each pair with respect to the other.
