To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAY A. STANTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, county of Branch, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Checkrein-IIolders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in check-rein holders, shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in thefollowing specification and claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for use in connection with side or over-head check reins by means of which the horse may be readily checked or un-checked,the construction being such that the horse may un-check itself upon the driver releasing the locking mechanism, but cannot be accidentally disengaged or easily broken.
Other advantages and improvements hereafter appear.
In the drawings accompanying this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a harness with the device in position upon the saddle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the lock,-t-he checkrein key being engaged. Fig. 3 is a similar View of a modification,-the check-rein key in this case not being inserted in the lock. Fig. 4: is a perspective View of the checkrein key. Fig. 5 is a modification of the same.
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings: A is the saddle, B the rein holder lock mounted thereon.
B is a screw-threaded shank integral with the look by means of which it is secured to the saddle by the nut B C is a latch formed with a shoulder 0 and pivoted at 0 to the side walls of the lock, its free end projecting beyond the walls and terminating in a relatively broad thumb will ' through which portion 0 whereby it may be readily operated.
D is a spring one end of which bears against the lower wall of the lock and the other against the underside of the latch C.

E is a key adapted to enter the lock B and provided at one end with an opening .6 the check-rein passes; the other end of the key being formed with a notch 6 designed to engage the shoulder o of the latch.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in which a flat spring I) is employed to raise the latch instead of the coil spring shown in Fig. 2,-the manner of operating the latch, however, is identical in either form.
Having indicated the several parts by reference letters, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood.
When it is desired to un-check the horse, it is only necessary to press the thumb on the free end of the latch C to release the checkrein key which may then be withdrawn, the horse unchecking itself. To check the horse the key is forced into the locking frame until the notched portion of the key passes the shoulder of the latch, the spring forcing the latter into locking relation with the key.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a check-rein holder, a locking member formed with a socket adapted to receive a key, a latch supported within said member and provided with a shoulder, said latch pivoted at one end to the walls of the locking member, its free end extending beyond the walls whereby it may be operated, a key having a loop at one end to receive a check-rein and provided with a notch to engage the shoulder of the latch, and a spring adapted to force the latch into looking relation with the key.
