Specification of Letters latcnt.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application filed November 3, 1906. Serial No. 341,806.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnn'r Smormno, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Brush-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brush holders for d name-electric machines and it has for its 0 ject to rovide a brush holder that shall be formed entirely from punched pieces of sheet metal and that shall be simpler in con struction. and cheaper to manufacture, while at the same time more satisfactory in service, than others heretofore provided.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a plan view of a. brush holder embodying my invention, some of the parts of which have been removed for the sake of clearncss of illustration. Fig. 2 is a view, in side elevation, of the brush holder of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the punched pieces of sheet metal from which the brush holder is formed, and F ig. 4 is an edgewise view of the piece shown in Fig. 3.
The brush holder comprises two side by side punched pieces 1 and 2 of sheet metal that are secured together at convenient places by means of rivets 3, the pieces being spread apart and bent near one end to form a rectangular box or guide 4 for a brush it. The brush 4* is provided with a conducting shunt 5, one end of which is secured, by means of a tap screw 6, to the extreme end of the holder, or it may be secured thereto at any other desired and convenient place. The pieces 1 and 2 are provided, near the other end, with corresponding a erturhs, and with sleeves 7 that are formc around the apertures by drifting or pressing to project outwardly therefrom. The brush holder is mounted u on a bar 8, the sleeves 7 forming a suitable aring surface therefor. After the pieces are riveted together, they are slotted at 9, by means of a saw 01' otherwise, from the apertures to the nearest end, and are spread apart and bent at this end to form an oponm for the reception of a bolt 10, whereby t e brush holder may be securely clamped to the bar 8. The upper edges of the pieces 1 and 2 are provided with so stantially circular projections 11 and 12, around the ed e of the latter of which are formed hook-s oped stops 13 that are bent at right angles to the plane of the piece.
The projections 11 and 12 are spread apart and provided with central bearings for a rod 15 which is surrounded by a spiral spring 14. The inner end of the spring 14 is fastened to the rod 15 and its outer end is extended to form an arm which engages the outer end of the brush 4. An arm 16 is secured to one end of the rod 15 and ooiiperates with the stops 13 to effect adjustment of the pressure that may be exerted by the spring 14 upon the brush 4.
The parts of the brush holder may assume other forms and may be otherwise arranged with reference to each other without departing from the invention, and I desire that all such modifications shall be included within its scope.-
I claim as my invention:
1. A brush holder for dynamo-electric machines comprising two side by side sheet metal pieces rivete together in close engagement except at one end where they are spread apart and bent to form a box for the brush.
2. A brush holder for dynamo-electric machines comprising two side by side sheet metal pieces riveted together in close engagement but spread apart at one place to form a box for the brush and at another place for the reception of means for exerting pressure upon the brush.
3. A brush holder for dynamo-electric machines comprising two side by side sheet metal pieces riveted together in close ongagcment but spread apart and bent at one on to form a box for the brush and provided with lateral projections near the other end between which is supported means for exerting pressure upon the brush.
4. A brush holder for dynamo-electric machines comprising two side by side sheet metal pieces riveted together in close ongagement but s read apart and bent at one end to form a ox for the brush and rovided with lateral projections between w llCll is supported a spring whereby pressure may be exerted upon the brush.
brush holder for dvnalno-electric machines comprising two side by side sheet metal pieces riveted together in close ongagement. but sn'cod apart and bent at one end to form a ox for the brush and provided with projections between which is supported a sprm whereby pressure may be exerted upon t e brush, and means for T 15 which-1s P o with Stops I 1 surrounding i4 slotted ends that are s rea apart and bent or ,or. .d n me-electric, i. ompr smg -twos eh side-sheet pieces riveted. together 1m bent-apart one end to form 1.1 boxior the brush and hhviu leteral-projectionset the other .epd, one 0, which is PI'OVidQdWlbll stops, a spring coated between the projections, and means 'deptedto cooperate with the stops forvad 'ustliffthe ring.
L1 tbrus holder for dynamoelectric echines comprisingtwo sideby side sheet metal pieces having pro ect1ons, one of a spring lothe projections, and means for coiiperatm with the stops to ad uSt the spring, sai' pieces having a rtures and lateral sleeve re ections, and
cet'ed between to receive a clamping evice.
8. A brush holder for d name-electric machines comprising two s1 e by side sheet metal pieces having projections, one of '25 which is provided with stops, a spring cated between the projections, and means "for coiiperating with the stops to adjust the .eprin said pieces having apertures and surrunn ng lateral. sleeve rqectione, and
,elotted ends that ere a rep a art and bent to receive a clamping evice, he other ends oi said Pieces being also s read apart and bent to mm a box for the rush.
9. A brush holder for a dynamo-electric machine comprising two side by side sheet rectal pieces having apertures and surround- 111% lateral sleeve projections and slotted on 5, said pieces being spread apart and bent to receive a clampin device.
10. A brush hol or for dynamo-electric machines comprising two side by side sheet rnetal pieces having apertures and surroundm lateral sleeve projections and slotted en 3, said pieces being spread apart and bent to receive a clamping device, and also spread apart and bent to form a box for the brush.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this th day of October, 1906.
