Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application filed December 3, 1908, Serial Io. 848,087: Benew'ed September 30, 1909. Serial No. 520,326.
tric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to dynamo-electric mac mes, andit has for its object to pro- I vide means for spacing and stifiening the armature windings of machines having relat vel large capacities.
(space is provided for venen suilicient acent colls of large size tilation between a armature'windings, it is desirable to provide means for spacing and stiffening the end connecting portions of-the winding, which shall not materially reduce the exposed surface.
'1 According to my present invention, relativelyfshort spacing blocks are interposed between adjacent coils of the winding and are held in sitionby' the usual insu ting wra ping at surrounds the end portions of t e winding.
s ing' laiganged My invention is illustrated in the accom- :panying drawings, in which.-
, F1 e is a view, partially in plan and amgi ii in section, of an armature windin accordance therewith,- and 3, 4B5, 6 and 7 are detail views of cing locks of my invention.
r'tion of a 'well known type of armature winding, each coil having tyo arallel 'strai ht rtions 1 and 2, which are] an ely inclu ed m the slotsgof a magnetiza'b e core, and V shaped .endfconnectin ortioris-i;v and 4 which complete the coi ach coil.,comprises a plurality of turns of conducting material, such as a copper strap .5, that are protected and insulated by a wrapping 6'of paper, mica'and cotton tape,
or other suitable insulating materials. Near the point of the V of the end connecting portlons of the winding-the adjacent coils :are se arated and stifiened1l -y blocks 7 and 8 offi r or other insulating material, whic are heldfin gositienaby themsulatin wrap? pin 6 by w icli theyiare'bound to e strap oon 'uctolts-z The blocks 7 an. ad to in against the sideof the strap wh e the block! 8 are eluded, one above the other,.in each armature slot.
Since the spacing blocks are bound in position by the insulatin wrapping, their application is simple an inexpensive and their ength is such as to interfere to a'minimum de ee with the ventilation of the winding.
t will be'zreadily understood that my improved spacers may be applied to various armature windings within the scope of my invention, and that their application is not restricted to the number per coil or to the arrangement shown in the drawings.
I claim as my invention:
1.1In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with an armature winding comprising a luralit-y of coils each of which consists 0 two arallel straight portions and substantially -shaped en -connectin portions, of relatively short spacing an insulating blocks located near the point of the V-shaped end connecting ortions and between both the adjacent sides and the adjacent edges of said portions, and means for fastening the respective side and edge blocks to adjacent coils.
2. In a dynamo-electric machine, the com-v bination with an armature winding comprising a plurality ofcoils each of which consists of two arallel strai ht portions and substantially Rkshaped endtions, of spacing and insulating ocks disposed between the end portions of the adjacent coils and held in position by insulating wrappings that surround the coils.
3. In a dynamo-electric machine, the conibination with an armature windin comprising a plurality of coils each of w ilCll conconnecting porsists "of two parallel straight portions and j substantially V-shaped end-connectin portions, of means interposed between ad acent sides and between adjacent edges '0 said end-connecting portions for so supporting and se arating said portions as to interfere J with t e ventilation of the winding to a minimum degree.
4. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with an armature winding com risa lurality of coils of insulating b ocks the coils by an insulating wrapping" for SD stifi'ening and separating the winding as to interfere with the mil ventilation to a minimum degree.
I 5. In a dynamo-electric machine,-the compination with an armature winding csmpris- 111g a, plurality of coils eac h d2? which con-' SlStS of two parallel s'tmip-ht portions and substantially V-shaped en -c0n'necfing portian's', 0i short spacing and insulating blocks locatecl near the point of the V-sha ved and connecting partions and between ihe Jawjacen surfaces izhereof, insulating wrappings for said pox'iiom which hold the SPERC- ing blacks in pcsitian.
In #:estimony whereof, I have. hereunto 1 subscribed my name this !28th day of No" vember, 1906.
