Description

I. 0. DAY. SGISSORS SHARPBNER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 26, 1908.

ISAAC OTIS DAY, OF OTTUMWA, IOWA.
SCISSORS-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1908. Serial No. 440,587.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC O'rrs DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of \Vapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sharpening device to be operated by the driving belt of a sewing machine, the device to be held in position upon the base of the machine while in use, the scissors to be sharpened to be held with the right hand.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan View.
In these drawings 1 represents the base plate of a machine provided with the usual driving belt 2. My device consists of a base plate 3 from the rear edge of which extends a bracket l in which is journaled a shaft 5 and upon said shaft is fixed a friction pulley 6 and a grinding wheel 7. Below and slightly in advance of the pulley the bracket carries a pin 8 on which is mounted a rotatable tension roller 9. An upwardly and forwardly curved arm 10 supports a rest plate 11 in advance of the grinding wheel, which plate is inclined toward the wheel, the plate having the same inclination as that of the proper bevel which should be given the cutting blades of the scissors.
In use the base 3 is placed upon the base plate 1 of the sewing machine and the drive belt 2 slipped between the roller 9 and the pulley 6. The fingers of the left hand rest upon the base 3 and the scissor blade is held in the right hand and is laid flat upon the rest plate 11, thus insuring the grinding of the blade to the proper bevel. The roller 9 serves to hold the belt in engagement with the pulley 6. By slipping the base 3 slightly forward the pressure of the belt against the pulley will be decreased, and by sliding the plate 3 in the opposite direction the friction between the belt and the pulley will be increased. It will be understood of course that movement of the base plate 3 in either direction will be very slight.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the kind described comprising a base plate, a bracket carried by the rear edge of said plate, a shaft mounted in said bracket, a pulley fixed on the shaft, a grinding wheel fixed on the shaft, a forwardly and upwardly curved arm, a rest plate supported by said arm in advance of the grinding wheel, and inclined with respect to the base plate, and a pin carried by the bracket below and slightly in advance of the pulley, as and for the purpose set forth.
ISAAC OTIS DAY.
