Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Intent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Application filed m s, 1909. Serial in. 498,468.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, Puree GRAHAM Muc- Gnucou, of the borough of Manhattan, city and State oi New York, have invented a certain ncwnnd useful Improvement in Double-Aeting Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertaii-is to a type of the foregoing devices 'iii'fvvhich o stream of liquid is adapted to be ejected-froth the syringe at each inward and outward -fi-jmovement of :1 piston or plunger.
The invention relates particularly to means whereby the suction inlet from the tank or liquid reservoir is taken from the lowermost part thereof whatever the discharging sition of the yringe whether it be inclined iipw-ard or do ward, or 1s held horizontally, it beingimmaterf l also what the angular {position with reference to the axis of the d scharge orifice may Certain other features ofthe invention relate to the control of the ports leading from the respect-i: spaces on op osite sides of the piston tothe space in irect communication with the discharge orifice. These various features together w1t-h novel details of construction are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which ure 1 is a longitudinal section through a syringe embodying the features of my im' provements. Fig. 2 is a similar section upon a somewhat larger scale, parts being broken awti ye Fig.3 is partly a longitudinal section; partly an elevation showing among other things the gravity positioned double ported suction inlet. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the locking device for lockmg the piston rod to and thereby hermetically sealmg the reservoir when the syringe is not in use. Fig. 5 is a modified construction of the suction inlet.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all figures.
The present double acting syringe may be used for-various purposes among which is that of a portable fire extinguisher.
It c0mpriscs a suitable tank or reservoir rovlded with a suitable filling plug a and ere-embodying a cylindrical body ortion 2 having hemispherical ends 2', 2'. 0 one of these ends anozzle 3 is secured while the op osite end is provided with a stulfing box t or a piston rod 5.
All-object of the present invention is to provide an organization such that when the instrument is suspended nozzle downward from a support (as for instance when not in use.) the pressure due to the weight of liquid 1n the syringe shall not operate to cause leakage past valve-mechanism leading to the dischar e nozzle. I have therefore secured to 110274 e 3 a discharge tube 6, the bore of this tube being a continuation of the discharge outlet in nozzle 3 and the free or entrance end to the tube being contiguous to the stuffing box end of the reservoir. Tube 6 is located in piston rod 5 which is made hollow for the purpose and for the further purpose of permitting the controlled flow of the liquid from end to end of the piston rod and out through tube 6. The piston rod works in a cylinder 7 entrance of the liquid to either end of which, that is to the cylin der space on either side of the piston there- 1n, may take place from either end of the reservoir, the suction furthermore being inde endent of the position angularly of the cylinder axis in which the reservoir may he held. These various results are here attained by theprovision of a multiple ported suction inlet (hereinafter termed double ported) and by journaling cylinder 7 to tube 6 adjacent to nozzle 3 and to piston rod 5 adjacent to stulfing box 4.
In the form illustrated in F igs. 1, 2 and 3; the double ported inlet comprises two simi' lar fittings -S, ouch comprising a head 8' secured to the corresponding end of cylinder 7 and by means of which heads the cylinder is rotatably mounted on tube 6 an rod 5 as aforesaid. Each fitting 8 also comprises a tubular part 8 the bore of which is open to the cylinder space at. that end, see port 8" and constitutes avalve chamber for a valve 9 which controls the passage through port 9' in a part 10 of tho fittlng which n-efera-bl is angularly related as indicated.
art 10 a so contains avalve chamber for an inwardly opening and outwardly closing valve 1.1 cotiperativo with. a seat in a cap 11' on the )art. Fittings 8, 8 are rigidly joined together by tubular rod 12 the bore of which communicates at each end by it corresponding port 12' with port 9 at that end. It is contemplated that the weight of fit tings 8, 8 and tubular rod 12 shall be suilicient to cause the parts to freely rotate about. the axis of the piston rod so that the suction inlets controlled by valves 11. 11. shall be substantially vertically beneath the piston axis whatever the rolarial position of the ing its further motion.
reservoir. It. is also evident that the describeddisposition of norts and tubular rod 12 permits the liquid to be drawn from either end of the reservoir. thus making it immaterial Whether the t'a-SBI'VOil is full or partially empty or held l'xorizontal at the time of discharge, downi urd.
Instead of the .hall valves 11, 11, described, their function may be performed by disk valves 11 11, connected by a rod 11 in rod 12 and mounted in corresponding valve chests 11*, 113* rigid with the respective tubular parts 8 ,8
The piston mounted on rod 5 is a two part, one, comprising a part 13 rigid with said rod and suitably packed, see. 15-5, and a part 14L slidable on'the rod between limits defined by part 13 and a shouldenforining closure 15 at the end of rod 5. Packing 1-1 of uston part 14 fits suiiiciently tight against the bore of cylinder 7 to cause duringthe initial movement of the piston in either direction the relative shifting of the piston part from one. extremity to the other extremity of its limited movement; the piston part, there after'is carried along by the piston rod dun At one extremity of its movement partl-l shuts otl" passage through ports 15 (one or more) iassing through the wall of the piston rod. At the other extremity of its movement these ports areopened while other ports 16 (one or more) atthe opposite sidcof the movable piston part are closed, these latter ports being open when the piston part is 'in the first mentioned position. W'hen ports 16 are'open, corresponding to a withdrawal of the piston rod, the liquid in front of the advancing piston passes through openings 17 in piston part 13, ports 16, hol- 10w piston rod 5, and thence into tube 6 from whence it can pass outward thnpugh the. nozzle. The passage taken by the liquid when the motion is reversed, via portsilo will be readily understood from-what. has
been described.
Air may enter the reservoir through stufi- 'ing box 4 to take the place; of the ejected liquid since the packing in the box may be made suliiciently porous to permit this.
Itbeing contemplated that the instrument shall be capable of being hung up by its handlcfwhen not in use means are provided for locking piston rod '5 to the reservoir when, this rod at; the inner end of its reciprocatory movement. This locking action is also'hereutilized to hermetically seal the reservoir" at'its packing box end thus pro eluding evaporation through the more or less porous packing therein. That is to say, when piston rod of its hand piece 18 and given an axial turn hooks 19-. 19' nu a fixture 19 secured to the red are adapted to engage with rcs 'iect-ive or inclined upward or 5 is thrust inward by means retaining catches '20, 20 provided on the stutliug box cover .21. This locking, motion also servs to draw packing: material 22 on the underside of fixture l9 firmly against co. er J1 and thus shut oil communication between the iulerior and exterior through the packing in the stulling box. Preferably also. hollmv piston rod Bis provided internally with a valve 23 adaptedto close the open end of tube (3 when the rod is locked tothe reserroir'and thus prevent. evapora lion through the. syringe nozzle.
