Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 8, 1909. Serial No. 488,679.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK G. DAVIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Tucson, in the county of Iima and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Blowing Attachments for Brooms, Brushes, and the Like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an air blowing attachment for brooms and sweepers.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for use in connection with brooms and sweepers to pro duce an air jet for blowing the dust out of corners and other places inaccessible to a broom.

With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a broom equipped with this improved attachment; and, Flg. 2 is a similar view on an enlarged scale' with the handle shown in longitudinal vertical section.

In the embodiment illustrated a broom 1, is shown having a pump cylinder 2, forming a ortion, of the handle and which is provi ed at its lower end with a metal casting 3, which is preferably detachably connected with the head 4, of the broom by means of an internally screw threaded shank 5, which is screwed into a threaded socket 6, formed in the lower face of said casting. This casting is also provided with two laterally extending valved channels 7, and 8, communicating with the interior of the cylinder 2, the channel 7, being provided with an inlet valve 7, opening to the atmosphere and the channel 8, communicates at its outer end with a tube 9, hereinafter described and is provided with an outlet valve 10.

The upper end of the cylinder 2, is closed by a casting 11 constructed similarly to the casting 3, but arranged in reverse position having a screw threaded socket 12, formed in its upper face for the reception of the lower end of the upper portion'of the hollow broom handle 13. This casting 11, is also provided with an inlet channel 14, having an inlet valve 15, arranged at its outer end with an outlet channel 16, communicating with the upper end of the tube 9, and provided with an outlet valve 17. A piston rod 18, extends through a central aperture in the metal plug 19, which closes the outer end of the handle member 13, and throu h an aperture in the casting 11, and extenfs into the cylinder 2 and is provided at its lower end with a piston 20, operable in said cylinder for compressing the air to be sup lied to the tube 9. This rod 18, is preferab y provided at its outer end with a wooden handle 21, for the convenient manipulation of the piston for compressing the air in the cylinder 2.

T e tube 9, is preferably made of metal and is soldered to the exterior of the cylinder 2, and is connected at its upper end with the outlet channel 16, of the casting 11 by means of a coupling 22. This couplmg permits the unscrewing of the upper pump castin from the cylinder to facilitate cleaning 0 the parts.

A. metal tube 23, extends through the straw head of the broom and is held by friction rigidly in position and may be moved upwar ly to provide for wearing away of the broom straws. The lower end of this tube 23, is provided with a small nozzle 24, which preferably extends outwardly at an angle to the broom head and is adapted to insure reater pressure with light pumpin A ru ber hose 25, is preferably used or connecting the lower end of the metal tube 9, with the upper end of the tube 23, to provide for any variation in different brooms and to avoid the use of expensive screw couplings.

When it is desired to extract dust from the corners of furniture, rooms or other places air is compressed within the cylinder 2, by manipulating the piston 20, and is forced out through the outlet valves 10, and 17, into the tube 9, and passes downwardly therethrough and is discharged in a jet like stream through the nozzle 24, onto the arti cle to be dusted.

It is evident that the broom may be used for ordinary sweepin pur oses and the air blowin attachment roug t into use only when desired. This attachment may also be used if desired for dusting picture moldings, picture frames or any kind of bric- Patented Apr. 5, 1910.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operationof the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various 0 anges in" the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A hollow broom handle having means for detachable engagement with a broom head, said handle having a valved inlet and outlet, a piston operable in said handle, and a tube connected at one end with said outlet and provided at its other end with a nozzle adapted to penetrate said head. and dis charged at one side thereof;

2. The combination with a broom head having a screw threaded member, of a hollow handle having a casting secured in its lower end and provided with a threaded member for engagement with said screwthreaded broom head member, said casting having laterally extending valved channels communicating with the interior of the handle, a tube connected with one of said channels and extendin into the head of the broom, the free en of said tube being bent outwardly and extending through the side of said head.
