CAN-HEADING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I FRED WEGNER, of Fail-port, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gan-Heading Machines; and I hereby declare the following to be a full,-clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and to the reference characters marked thereon.
The present invention relates to can heading machines of the type in which seaming devices, preferably rollers, bearwith pressure against the seam during a relative rotation of the can and the seaming device, and the object of the present invention is to support the seam of the can head in such a manner that the metal of the seam will not be caused to spread over the can supporting head and interfere with the discharge of the can from the machine.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and com binations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, showing the elements of the machine entering into my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing portions of the seaming mechanism and the can supporting head in plan; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through a portion of one of the seaming rollers and the can supporting head.
The cans upon which this machine is designed to operate each comprise a body A formed with outwardly extending flanges B at its ends, and heads C depressed centrally to fit within the body, the flanges of the heads D beyond the central depressed portions being rolled by a suitable seaming mechanism with the flanges B to form the seams.
It is preferable to form only one seam at a time in order that the can may be filled with suitable material, therefore assuming one end of the can to be seamed, this end is placed upon a rotary support 1 and a seam supporting head 2 is introduced into the central depression at the other end either by moving the rotary support 1 or by mov- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing the head 2, or both of them. The head 2 preferably comprises a cylindrical or other shaped portion 2 which fits within the depression in the can head, and seam supporting flange 2 at the inner end of the said portion, having that face 2 which is in proximity thereto curved and merging into portion 2 The other face of the flange lies in the'plane of the outer edge of the curved face to provide a sharp edge. The flange 2 prevents the metal of the seam being forced above the supporting portion which interferes with the withdrawal of the can from the head, while the curved face of the flange serves to cause the seam to roll.
The seaming operation is preferably effected by rotating the can in contact with a pair of seaming rollers 3 mounted, if desirable, on slides 4 so that they may be moved toward the can. These seaming rollers are preferably guided on the upper face of the flange and for this purpose have grooves 5, the upper portions of the walls of which bear against the upper face of the flange which, by reason of the sharp edge, permits the entire seam to be rolled and compressed by the rollers. The other portions of the walls of the grooves serve to roll the flanges and to compress them when the rollers are moved toward the can.
In operation the head 2 is preferably constantly rotated and a can with a head thereon is fitted to the rotary support 1 which is then moved to clamp the can against the head 2. When the can is clamped, as shown in Fig. 1, the seaming rollers are moved toward it to first roll it into a seam and then to compress the seam. The flange on the head 2 enters the groove and assists in the rolling of the seam and at the same time it prevents the metal being forced over the head to retard the discharge of the can.
I claim as my invention:
1. A head for can seaming machines comprising a portion to fittwithin the head of a can, and a seam supporting flange surrounding the head at one end of the head fitting portion, and provided with a curved face merging into the head fitting portlon, and also with a flat face which lies in the plane of the outer edge of the curved face to provide a sharp edge.
