I Q Inv tor:
@MMMA adjustably disposed in such a way, that they UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

CUTTING DEVICE FOR BREAD, MEAT, AND THE LIKE.
ven'ted certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Devices for Bread, Meat, and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
The present invention relates to a device for simultaneously cutting bread, meat and the like, into a number of equal slices. The essential characteristic feature of the invention consists in the disposition of a removable grate, adapted to receive the article to be cut, on a bed-plate, and a plurality of knives secured to the bed-plate or frame by means of links in such a way, so as to admitof a swinging movement of the same. Both the knives as well as the grate are moved toward each other with the assistance of a hand-lever also mounted in the frame, and
.racks of the grate, and grasps with the aid of abutments around the links of the knives. By moving the lever the knives are forced into the article to be cut and the same is thereby carved into the desired slices. The knives as well as the grate are removably and may be replaced by another grate and another set of knives, or as the case may be only by another set of knives, with the knives and grate bars spaced nearer or farther from one another, the spaces corresponding to the required thickness of the slices.
In the accompanying drawings in which like parts are similarly designated Figure 1. shows a side view, and Fig. 2 a front new of the device. Fig. 3 re resents a single grate bar and Fig. 4 a sing e cutting knife. Fig. 5 shows a set of adjustable cutting knives.
To the bed-plate or-frame a of the device a fork-like hand-lever- 0 is secured swinging.
in bearings Z). The lever 0 is provided with a toothed segment d engaging with racks a These racks e are secured to a, sliding-carriage f, shding to and fro 1n guldes g of the frame a. Theslidlng-carrlage f carries a number of bars h, Figs. 1 to 4, united to the grate by means of bolts h and kept in proper position by small plates 72 In the bearings b and b of the frame a arepivoted links 5, i the disengaged ends of which are Specification of Letters Patent.

heavier construction. The hand-lever c is provlded w1th abutments 0 c WhlCh grasp behind or in front of the links 2', leaving a certain amount of play between one another in such a manner, that as soon as the movement of the lever 0 in one or the other direction begins, the slidingscarriage f together with the grate have already been moved to a certain extent, ere the abutments c and 0" respectively, grasp behind or in front of the links '5, causing the knives Z to proceed in the same direction by a. further swinging movement of the hand-lever c.
The device operates in the following manner: The article 9 to be cut, for instance, bread, meat, or the like, is put upon the grate h and the hand-lever 0 is then moved in the direction of the arrow 00. By means of the toothed segment 61 the grate, whose bars h are provided with an abutment h is moved in the direction of the arrow 2. After having swung the lever 0 into an approximate vertical position the abutments 0 grasp behind the links 11, by which proceeding the knives Z are swung by means of the links 71, i in a circular way about the bearings 7), 6 toward the article g to be carved and thereby cut the latter into a number of slices, By reversing the lever 0, at first the sliding-carriage f is returned until the abut- In order to obtain slices of difierent thickp Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
