It is obvious,-that if desired, the piedetermining' feature of the invention may be used as an indicating or registering mechanism' to keep account of the quantity of liquid. ldischarged, in which case the locking should befleft oii .and the ,figures on the dial arranged so as to progress inthe opposite direction from that shown.
Heretofore in double .acting single cylinder piimps where registers have been employed to keep track of the quantity of liquid discharged, they have been. made to register the. quantity discharged by a com'- plete reciprocation of the up-stroke or the return of the piston. This construction is faultyfor the reason that if it is desired to discharge a less quantity than that discharged by a complete reciprocation of the piston, a quantity greater than that discharged would be registered or none at all.
In some instances,'it is very desirable to discharge the desired quantity by the continued movement of the operating handlel in of the piston at the end one directioitbut the great difficulty heretofore in single' cylinder double acting'self measuring,-pumps has been thatthe same amount of'iquid would'not be dischz-irged upon one=s'ti'okel of the piston as upon the other, due to the displacement of the liquid above the piston by the piston rod. This objection has been overcome by the followT ing simple and etiicient means. Extending downwardly from 'the piston, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is a rod 450i the same cross sectional area as the piston rod 3, which displaces the same quantity ofliquid below the piston l as the rod 3 does above. The rods 3 and 45 pass through suitable packing boxes 68 and 69 which are-mounted upon the head 4 and tively.
