To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANZ VON TAXIS, a subject of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor, and resident of Innsbruck, Austria-Hungary, have invented a Device for Drawing On and Drawing Off Galoshes and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device for drawing on and drawing off articles which are worn over shoes, preferably galoshes. The necessity of such a device has been long felt, but hitherto it has not been possible to obviate the many disadvantages attending the drawing on and the drawing off of galoshes. The galoshes or other articles worn over shoes are always covered with mud, after being used, for which reason it is disagreeable to take hold of them with the hand, and the surface of the shoe, being slippery, does not aiford any hold for the fingers. Consequently as a rule the galosh is removed from the one foot by means of the other, in which operation the upper edges are damaged and the sole is considerably bent. The person who is removing the galosh from the shoe is obliged to raise the one leg, so that it is only with difliculty that he can stand upright and when his body sways he is unable to prevent parts of the clothing, viz., the lower parts of the coat or the like from coming in contact with the dirty surface of the galosh. Even the drawing on of the galosh is attended with difliculty, as not only have the same hindrances to be overcome as in drawing it ofi but the slipping of the foot into the galosh when the latter is held with the hand requires considerable skill, and is usually a matter of some ditficulty. Some people press the galosh firmly against the ground, by means of the other foot, thereby damaging same causing it to wear out quickly.

According to the present invention the lower part of a stick (for example an umbrella stick or walking stick) is pro-vided with an extension piece, by means of which on pulling or pressing the stick the wearer is able, while supporting himself with the stick without havin to stoop, to push his foot into or to with raw it from the galosh.

An example of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

The galosh 1 is provided at the heel with a hookshaped extension 2, bent downwardly, which represents the passive part of the device. The active part consists of a stick 3, the lower end 4 of which is bent upward. When the galosh is drawn off the lower surface 5 of the stick is pressed against the extension 2. When it is drawn on the hook 40f the stick is put under the extension piece and pulled upward. In order to prevent a rapid wearing away of the extension piece, the latter may be reinforced with inserted metal plates. A metal ring 6, serving the same purpose as the lower end of the stick 3, is arranged on the lower part of an umbrella stick 7 and fixed thereto in any suitable manner. The projection 8 on the ring takes the place of the hook 4, the lower edge of the ring that of the surface 5.

Fig. 4: illustrates a form of the invention which may be employed practically to the widest extent. At the same height as that at which an extension piece 10 of the galosh furnished with a spring fastening device is situated, the walking stick has two jaws 11, the lower one of which is fixed while the upper one is movable and is pressed downward by means of a spring 12 situated in a sleeve 13. The sleeve 13 has a slot in which the upper jaw is guided. A tension rod 15 is connected with said upper aw and is provided with a handle, which is movable along the stick 9, and slides in ties 14:. By means of a flexible locking device 16 that catches in notches in the stick and can be released by pressure applied to the'end, the rod 15 can be secured in the proper position at any time.

This device is employed as follows: The stick rests with its lower end against the ground, only the extension 10 coming between the jaws 11. When the locking device 16 is released the jaws clamp the extension piece firmly in consequence of the action of the spring 12. It is then easy to insert the foot in the galosh which is now immovable on the ground or to withdraw it therefrom. The important point is that the stick can be employed for seizing and holding the shoe as well as for suporting the body itself.

The upper end of the stick 3 may be suitably formed like a spoon in order that it may be employed as a means of drawing on slippers and the like.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i

1. A device for drawing galoshes on and OH comprising means having superposed and oppositely directed portions for engagement above or below the extensions of a galosh respectively for drawing the same on and oil from the foot.

2. A device for drawing galoshes on or off comprising a stick provided with superposed and oppositely directed portions for engagement above or below the extension of the galosh, respectively, one of said portions being movable.

3. A device for drawing galoshes on and 0E comprising in combination, a stick pro vided with a portion for engagement below the extension of a galosh, a spring pressed portion for engagement above such an extension, and means for raising said spring pressed portion.
