GAR UNDERFRAME. I APPLICATION FILED mm. 27, 1909.
w Patented Apr. 5, 39M).
n m" w, h i W e w lt CHARLES F. FREDE. OF ST. LOUIS MISSOURI. ASSIGNOR TO Cl lST STEEL PLATFORM COMPANY. OF ST. LOUIS. MISSOURI. A CORPORATION OF DELAWABE.
CAR-UNDERFRAIVIE.
Application filed December 27, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 1135,07?
()n the middle portion l adjacent to each lie it known that l, (bunnies 1 Billion, a end thereof at a suitable distance from. its
citizen of the United trltates, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Iniproven'icnt in Car Underfraines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a metallic bullin; end sill for a car undert'ranic,in which the end portions of the sill are separable from its middle portion, and my invention has for its object principally, to increase the strength of the middle portion, and to obtain a more rigid attachment of the end portions thereto.
it consists in features of novelty as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming partof this specification, whereon,
Figure 1, a top plan View of my i1nproved balling cnd sill; Fig. 2, a front elevation thereof, and Figs. 3, l, and 5, vertical transverse sections thcreof to enlarged scale, on lines '3, 3, l, l, and 5, 5, respectively, in Fig. 1.
Like letters and numerals of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
(L represents my improved metallic bull' log end sill which is preferably con'iposed of cast steel and consiets of a middle bulling portion 1, and two end portions 2, separately COllhll'lltjltltl from and adapted to be reniovably llxod to the middle portion las hereinafter more particularly described. The middle portion ,1, which extends lengthwise for a suitable distance on each side of the longitudinal contt'l' of the car, in preferably box shaped in crosvs section and closed at each end, having ite niaxiniun'i Width at the said renter and thence reduced in width toward each end thereby Oblltlllb ing a strong and rigid structure best adapted for resisting and transmitting boiling and end shock uniformly to the middle ant adjacent longitmlinal members 3 (indicated by dotted lines in Fig". l of the car u'nderframv, which in the present case butt cnd wise againstthe roar side of the vHill (L having roarwardly projecting brackets 4. to which the nu-mbers 2) are fixed.
'lransversnly through the middle portion 1 are formed the center and side openings 5 and 5 respectively, for the passage and play of the l)lllllll l(lllfi (not: shown) In the usual woll-known manner.
rear side is formed preferably integral therewith, an upright bracket (3 which is adapted for the attachment thereto of an upright post (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l) 7 of the car superatruct n'c.
.blach end portion 2 of the bill a may be of any suitable shape, preferably, in the present case when assembled, of an inverted l t-shape in cross sect ion for the support and attachment thereto of the wood filling (not shown) to which the end fran'ieworlr of the car vestibule attached, the inner and preferably wider end of the end por: tion 2 being closed by an upright, web 8 which is adapted to hear at its outer side against the corresponding end of the middle portion 1, the web 8 having an outwardly projecting horizontal flange 9 at r ght angles thereto adapted to lit preferably within a correspondingly sliiaped recess 9 formed therefor in the top (i the middle portion 1 (preferably behhul the upr' it brackets 6 thereon for the poets i),
the web 8 and flange 9 are lined y cite (or bolts) 10 and it) respectivel whereby any downward stress on the end portion 2 will cause it to bear pivotwiae agaii'ist the lower part of the upright end wall of the middle portion 1 and so produce shear stress on the vertical rivets 10 through the flange 9. The outer end of each end portion 2 is preferably closed by an upright web 1]. to which in the case of a blind end car the outer longitudinal members; (not shown) of the undorlramc may be fixed to the Hill a,
all? in hero noted that the attachment, each end portion 2 to the middle portion 3. is practically etfected'by the vertical rivets it) through the flange 9, the horizontal rivets IO-lhrough the web 8 being auxiliary i only for insuring a close tit 0ft)? Web 8 against the upright end of the middle portion it i l'vhat I claim as my invention and desire to varr-urn by Letters Patient is r l. in a. car umlvrl'ranw, a metallic end sill having a middle pol'iion boxhluqged in cross section and closed at each end, and an end portion adapted to be fixed to. the mid dl portion.
:2. in a car underfrainc, a metallic. end sill having a middlev portion box'shapcd in cro s means subject to shear stress only for fixing the'sziid portions together. 6. In a car nodal-frame, a metallic end sill having a middle portion, an end portion adapted to be fixed to the middle portion and an upright bracket on and integral 15' With the middle portion forwai'd of the end portion.
6. In a car underfranie, a, metallic end sill having a middle portion and two end portions adapted to be fixed to the middle 20 portion, the said middle portion having openings transversely therethrongh for the bufiingstems, and upright brackets on the middle portion forward of the end portions.
