Description

A. S. NEWTON. COMBINED WASTE VALVE, OVERFLOW, AND STRAINER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 28, 1909.

To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, ALBERT S. hlnw'roiz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Provide ce and State of Rhode island, have invented certain new and useful. improvements in Combined Waste-l alves, Qvertiow, and Strainers, of which the following is a specificatii'm.
My invention relates to the waste valve, overflow pipe, and strainers, of lasins, )tttl'i tubs and so forth, and is purposed to dispense with the overflow perforations located in the basin margins; to render the strainer commonly located in the plug unnecessary; to increase the speed of discharge of the waste water from the basin; to facilitate the assembling and disassembling and cleaning of the parts; and to simplify and lessen the expense of manufacture of the constituent parts.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein,

In the drawings 1 represents the bottom of a basin or tub in which is fixed the waste pipe 2 which in this instance is provided with an exterior thread 3 and with an annular external flange t upon its upper end. Integral with or soldered to the portion l of the plug is a strainer 3 comprising a cylindrical body provided with parallel annu larly arranged series of rectangular openings, 6. The body 5 .is provided near its top with an interior screw thread 8 adapted to engage an external thread 9 upon the reduced lower margin 10 of a ring l1 seated upon the body, and provided with a rectangular vertically disposed recess 12 upon its inner margin. Slidably and rotatably mounted in the ring 11 is a vertical overflow pipe 1.3 provided near its top with overflow openings 14, having a flaring upper extremity 8F PROVIDEHCE,
which forms the handle, This handle may be integral with the pipe or have a threadeo connection therewith. i collar 16 is fixed by internal threads or otherwise to the exterior of the lower end of the pipe 13 and is provided. with an inclined exterior taco 1?. This collar constitutes a valve adapted to seat itset' in the upper end oi. the plug. lpon. an intermediate portion of the pipe 12-3 is an oblong longitudinally disposed lug l9, pre'ti-rably rectangular in cross section, of oimensions sui'licieut to permit its passage into the opening l2 as a sliding fit.
Assuming the parts to be in closed position shown in Fig. 9, to discharge the waste the pipe 13 is manually elevated through the handle 15 thus raising the lower end of the lug 19 above the ring 11, to the position shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the operator turns the pipe 13 to the right or left so that the lug rests upon the top of the ring and retains the valve 16 elevated while the water passes from the basin through the strainer into the pipe 3. lVhen it is necessa to connect or disconnect the ring 11 to or irom the member the lug 19 is passed into the channel 12 and the pipe is roated. The lug 19 serves as a guide tor the ring, and also as a wrench upon the ring whereby the same may be screwed or un' screwed, and further to retain the pipe 13 or valve 17 in raised position after it has been elevated.
"i fhat I claim is,
1. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with the waste pipe, of a strainer member upon the top of the waste pipe, a ring detaehably mounted upon the strainer member, an overiilow pipe slidably mounted in. the ring, and a detachable valve member upon the overtlow pipe adapted to rest upon the waste pipe.
2. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with the waste pipe, 0i" :1 strainer member upon the waste pipe com prising cylindrical body provided with annularly disposed horizontal openings, a ring detachably mounted upon the strainer body, an overllow pipe slidably mounted in the ring, and a detachable valve upon the overflow pipe.
iln a device of the type set forth, the combination with the waste pipe, of a. strainer member upon the waste pipe comprising a cylindrical body provided with parallel annularly arranged series of separated horizontally disposed openings, a ring upon the strainer body, an overflow pipe slldably mounted in the ring; and a valve upon the overflow pipe.
4. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with the waste pipe, of a strainer provided with a plurality of horizontally disposed separated openings and disposed upon the top of the waste pipe a ring upon the strainer member provided with a vertical recess in its inner margin, an overflow pipe slidably and rotatably mounted in the ring and provided with a lateral lug adapted to register in the recess, and a valve upon the overflow pipe.
5. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with the waste pipe of a strainer member upon the waste pipe comprising a cylindrical body provided with horizontally disposed separated openings and with screw threads upon its upper portion, a ring provided with screw threads adapted to engage the threads of the body and provided with a vertical recess in its margin, an overflow pipe slidably and rotatably mounted in the ring and provided with a lateral lug adapted to register in the recess, and a valve upon the overflow pipe.
6. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a waste pipe, of a strainer member comprising a cylindrical body provided with annular openings, a ring on the strainer member, an overflow pipe slidingly mounted with relation to the ring and provided with a valve member receivable within said ring, and means whereby rotation of the overflow pipe will disconnect the ring from the strainer member.
7. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a waste pipe, of a strainer member, a ring above the strainer member, an overflow pipe slidingly mounted with relation to the ring and provided with a valve member receivable within said ring, the ring being provided with a vertically disposed recess in its inner wall and the overflow pipe with a longitudinally disposed projection for cooperation with said recess.
8. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a waste pipe, of a strainer member, a ring above the latter, an overflow pipe slidingly mounted with relation to the ring, and interengaging means on the ring and overflow pipe for guiding the ring, ro-
tating the same and holding the overflow pipe in raised position.
9. In a device of the type set forth, a waste pipe, a strainer member, a ring above the latter, an overflow pipe, and a longitudinal lug on the overflow pipe, the ring having a recess extending wholly through the same to receive the lug, whereby the lug acts as a guide, as means for turning the ring and for holding the overflow pipe in its elevated position.
