Serial No. 458,314.
To all who/m 'it may concern.'
le it known that we, CHARLES E. YNDERO and VIVIAN K. YNnEAno, citizens of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Chehalis and State of lVashington, have invented a new and useful Sleigh- Brake; and we do hereby declare the tollowing to be va full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
rlhe invention relates to improvements in brakes for sleighs, and has for its object to provide a device of this character adapted to be applied to sleighs ot all kinds and sizes and which is capable of regulating the speed of a sleigh in going down grade or oit stopping the same entirely.
Another object ot the invention is to provide a pair ot improved brakes, one applied to each of the runners of the sleigh and capable of being actuated independently of each other.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view ot a'sleigh embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the sleigh inverted. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the sleigh. Fig. et is a transverse sectional view taken through one of the brakes at the pivot. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the looped end of one of the springs. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detailed view of one of the front pulleys.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the body or frame ot' an ordinary sleigh. Each side of the sleigh is provided with a disk 2 on which is arranged a washer 3. 4 is an L-shaped brake lever. The disk, the washer, and brake-lever are pivoted to the side or runner of the sleigh by a bolt The front end of the lever 4 is provided with an eye 6 to which is connected a cable 7. Cable 7 travels over a pulley 8 which pulley is rigidly connected to the side or runner of the sleigh. The iront beam or draft beam S) of the sleigh is provided with a pair ot hooks l0, each of which is connected with a pulley ll which is also engaged by the cable 7. Then it is desired to apply the brakes, the cable T is drawn rearwardly which raises the front end of the lever and causes the rear post to engage the groninl or snow and thus check the speed ot the sleigh or stop it entirely.
rlhe pulley 8 is provided with a casing S, which casing serves as a guide in preventing the cable from slipping oil o1 said pulley. rlhe casing 8L also serves as a ulcrum for a spring l2 which is provided with an L- shaped portion i3, the extremity of which is provided with a loop le which engages the lever 4t. lVhen the brakes 4L are applied, it will be seen that lthe loop leladmits ot a slidable engagement with said brake or lever, as will be readily understood. The spring l2 holds the lever normally out oit engagement, and the pressure of the spring is limited by a lug 15.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A device ot the class described, consisting of a pair of runners, an L -shaped brake lever' pivoted to each of said runners a cable secured to said levers, said cable passing through pulleys rigidly secured 'to said runners and thence through pulleys which are loosely mounted upon a cross beam which connects the ends of the runners, a spring secured at one end to each runner the other end terminating' in a loop adapted to surround the brake lever, said loop being adapted to slide upon the lever when the same is actuated.
Q'. A device of the class described, eon sisting oi a pair oi runners, an L-shaped brake lever pivoted to each ci said runners, a washer interposed between each lever and the runner at the pivot point, a cross beam connecting the ends of the runners, a pair of pulleys mounted upon said cross beam, a pulley secured to each of the runners, a cable adapted to pass through both sets of pulleys, the ends ot said cable being attached vto the ends of the brake levers, said cable being adapted to actuate said levers, a spring se- Cured ai' 011e end to euch l'lllmel the ofher l names i0 this Specification in the presence 0f end 'ermuai'ng in a loep which adapted l iw) sulcribng witnesses. to .surwuml the brake leve' and 'return the .CHARLES E.
