If the voltage is low electromagnet ,10 is relatively weak and vibratory arm ll stays in contact with conductor 2O a good proportion of the time; if the voltage is normal ora little high, electromagnet l() will be strong and keep the vibratory arm out of contact with conductor for a good proportion of the time. By properly proportioning the electromagnet l() and the controlling spring 2l, the current through the main lamps of the car may be regulated to within a few hundredths of an ampere, and the light distributed by the four lamps olf each series may be maintained substantially constant irrespective ot' variations in the voltage ot' the traction system.

To avoid complications in the drawings,

This system of lamp regulation is applicable to either alternating current or direct current systems.
W'hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-.
l. The combination with a source of electrical energy subject to material fluctuations in voltage, of lamps receiving energy yfrom said source, and vibratory means responsive to variation in voltageon said source and cooperating with at least one ot' said lamps to maintain substantially constant light from other lamps of the system.
2. The combination. with a source of powersubject to substantial fluctuations in voltage, of a plurality of lamps disposed in series and receiving energy from said source, a resistance in series with said lamps, and vibrating means responsive to variations in voltage on said source for automatically regulating the voltage across said resistance to maintain substantially constantlight from i said lamps.
The combination with a circuit and an electric lamp connected across said circuit, of a resistance in sei'ies with said lamp, and current responsive regulating means connected across said circuit to intermittently cut said resistance out of circuit in response to variations ol voltage on said circuit and thereby maintain said lamp at substantially uniform brilliancy.
