Specification of Letters Patent. -Pa.tented Mar. 29, 1910. Applieation flled October 20, 1908. Serial No. 458,651.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AIBERT T. POWELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing; Machines, of'which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in washing machines of the oscillating type, and the ob- 'ect of the invention is an improved machine of this character which is primarily in-' tendedfor use in laundries, or the like, where washing is conducted upon a large scale, although it is to be understood that 1t may be also successfully employed for domestic use; which embodies a peculiar construction so as to efiect the thorough agitation of the clothes and cleanse the same in a comparatively short time and with a mininum amount of labor; which is susceptible of bein conveniently-operated by hand or by mac inery, and which possesses certain other advantages, that will become at once apparent as the invention is disclosed, over the ordinary devices of this character in eneral use.
With this and other objects in view that:
will more fully appear as the description proceeds the lnvention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe, and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claim.
' For a full understanding of the-invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a washing machine constructed in accordance withmy invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal section, the section being taken on' the line 33 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4. is a transverse section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In carryin out my invention, I provide a stand 1 whic may be of any desired or approved construction or design, except that it embodies two spaced side members 2 which are substantially similar in form and preferably frame-1i e in structure, and which constitute double inclined tracks or runways 3, of substantiall inverted V-shape, the sides of each track eing oppositely 1nclined and arranged at an acute angle with respect to each other. In the resent instance, these tracks are rovide at corresponding points near their lower ends with stops 4 for a'purpose'to be presently disclosed.
5 designates a preferably elongated box or body w ich carries on its opposite sides near the lower edge of the same, pairs 0 longitudinally spaced channeled rollers 6 WhlCh are designed to engage the respective tracks 3 to support the body between the side members 2 and render it susceptible of oscillation therebetweenn The ends of the body 5 are oppositely tapered, as shown, to constitute upper and lower inclined deflecting surfaces and 8, and the interior of the box is preferably provided with aplurality of transverse ribs 9 so as to form a roughened surface against which the arments are desi nod to be rubbed during tli of t e machine. r
. In order to permit the garments to be conveniently introduced into .and removed from the body 5, the same is provided in its to with a door 10 which is of any suitab e construction and which is preferably arranged so as to be capable of being convenicntly opened when desired, to permit the inspection of the contents of the body of manual 0 eration. When one end of the body 5 is epressed, the contents of the same will gravitate toward such end and will 'strike against the lower surface 8, from which the will be 'deflected against-the upper sur ace 7 and will then be caused to movetoward the opposite end of the body, thereby forming up er and lower currents within thesbody an causing the'garments to befi'ectually agitated therein and rubbed a ainst 'the ribs 9 durin their traverse'in t e same. When the b0 y 5 is inclined in e operation V use of my improved the opposite direction, with the other end depressed, the above operation will be re peated, and it will thus be seen that when a comparatively rapid oscillatory motion is imparted to the body the clothes will be thoroughly cleansed with a minimum exertion of power.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that I have provided an improved washing machine which embodies to a marked degree the elements of siniplicity and durability and is not likely to get out of order, even when subjected to hard usage; which is efficient in operation and may be economically actuated so to render it capable of being advantageously employed in laundri'es or the like, and which consists of comparzitively few parts that may be easily and cheaply manufactured and readily assembled.
It will also be observed that a machine constructed in accordance pith my invention may be success tully employed as a churn, altho ggh in this instance; it would be unnecessary to provide the ribs 9 in the interior 9f the body portion 5.
Asn preeautionary measure, to )reelude the possibility of the body porti n becoming detached from the stand during the operation of the washing machine, I have, in the present instance, extended the tracks '3 near the apexes or upper ends thereof, so as to form stops P which prevent. the
rollers at the elevated end of the body portion from becoming accidentally disengaged from the tracks, and which thus prevent the v ocking of the body portion from becoming too violent. Furthermore, it will be seen that the stops 1 and 4 are so spaced and the tracks or runways 3 so arranged that when the rollers at the depressed end of the body portion abut against the corresponding .lower stops 4:, the body portion may be or a being curved laterally at points adjacent-to the transverse connecting bars to form stops, a receptacle mounted for oscillation on the tracks and provided with wheels having oppositely disposed flanges bearing agaim; the inner and outer faces of said tracks, said tracks embracing the major portion of the receptacle with their apexes disposed near the upper edge of said receptacle and in a plane above the rims of the wheels when the receptacle is at rest.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
