To all whom it may concern: 1
Beit known that I, EDSON F. GApLnUnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and ders can be grouped so that the low-stage compressioncylinder will also be located at the top of the machine and to one side of the steam cylinder, while the second-stage compression cylinder will be located immediately below the low-stage cylinder, and the third and high-stage cylinders are also located in the lower or bottom part of the machine and immediately below. the steam cylinder. The ene'ral arrangcment of the cooling system is such that the pump for the cooling medium may be located near the bottom of the nmohine and between the new and useful Improvements in Air-Compresso'rs, of which the. following is a specificat-ion.
My invention relates to improvements in a steam air compressor for torpedoes where the air is compressed to a very high degree.
My compressor isv a multiple stage cylindercompressor with an arrangement of cooling medium will be pumped upwardly fromthe bottom of the machine through the dillerent coolers and the cooling medium circulation will thereafter be downward to the various compressors. in a general way the cooling'medium circulation follows that illustrated and fully described in the application of A. J. Pocock and R Fi. Allgire, Ser. No. 275,819, filed August 25, 1905. its explained fully in that application, the cooling medium is pumped direct to each of the .multiple stage coolers and from the coolers it circulates through the jacket of the associated air compression cylinders and thereafter is' discharged. The air circulation is from the low-stage compression cylinder to its associated cooler and thereafter to the secondstage compression cylinder efiieiency and the compactness of the device.
General .armngenwnt.-The general arrangement of the machine is such that the steam cylinder and multiple stage compression cylinders are arranged attthe top and bottom of the compressor, while'the inter-- mediate connecting 1 device for the steam cylinder and the multiple stage compressing and the pump devices for the cooling medium of the multiple stage coolers as well as the pump device for theoil are located stantially central location.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig, 4 is a sectional view on the line b b of Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the flywheel and starting mechanism. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of one of the multiple stage compression cooler-and thereafter to the succeeding compression cylinder and its associated cooler alwayscirculating through the various coolers and the after-cooler in a direction opposite from that of the cooling medium; Likewise, the circuit for the oiling medium is in a direction from the bottom of the machine upwardly and the same is circulated under pressure by means of the pumping mechanism located near the bottom of the machine.
