The parts so far described are adapted to coperatie with any desired'power controlling device, and/in the modified form of invention shown in Fig' are vconnected with an automatic switch 31 by which power1 to an electric driving lmotor may be cutl eff. In this form .the switch blade 3Q is normally held in dotted line position by means of the tension spring 33and4is retained in contact with the switch block 3ft by means of a latch lever-35 pivoted at 3G and engaging the swith blade at its end 37. The outer endBS of this lever is pivoted to the connector 29 controlledy by 'the cover or screen 26. Beneath the lever 35v a cam 39 is secured on the4 rock shaft 21 so that a movement of this shaft caused by either the inward niovement of the board or the raising of the cover rocks the lever to release the switch blade and permit its automatic movementte cut off the power.
For the purpose of controllingthe power to va belt driven machine a shifting nieeliane ism is used to cooperate with the driving alleys. These pulleys may comprise the lbose ,pulleys ,40 and 41 adapted to receive belts (not showin-which are driven at dif-V -ferent speeds in the usual manner. These pulleys are mounted upon a slift42 supported in a bearing 43 carried by a bracket 44 for that purpose. Power is transmitted from this shaft in the usual manner to the parts of the machine to be operated. The pulleys 40 and 4.1 are mounted to freely `rotate upon the shaft while the pulley 45 them.
The latch mechanism comprises a base '55 secured to the bracket 44 in any desired Y manner and formed with a central tubular casing 56 in which the latch bolt 57 is 'mounted,' the upper end thereof being formed with a'curved .tooth 58 adapted' to seat in a notch or recess 59 formed in the shifting shaft 446 before described. This notch is also formed with an inclined face 60 to facilitate the engagement and disenga-gement of the bolt tooth therewith. The
` bolt is formed with a transverse slot or recess 61 Awithin which a cam 62 is disposed and carried by the rock shaft 63 extended therefrom and provided with an operating arm 64. It will be seen'that the oscillation of' this. cam will positively shift the bolt toward and from-the shaft 46. This shaft may be held under tension by any desired means in order to restore it to the vvnonoperative position of the machine as shown by full lines in Fig. 1. a tensionv device is shown and comprises a chain or cable 65 provided at its lower end with. a rod 66 upon which a weight 67 is disposed. This chain extends through the curved tube 68 and is connected to the guide bracket at 69.' -In the operation of the invention as ap- "plied in Figs. 1 and 2 the -belt guides are cated by dotted lines'in Fig. 1. Such movement raises one of the weights which exerts a tension to return the shifter to a nonoperativev position. This returnv movement is resisted by the latch' which engages the shifting shaft and retains the machine in operative position .at either speed desired. Under these conditions ifthe hand of the operator presses against .the guard board the rock shaft controlled thereby is shifted and .thelatch bolt operated through the connections described to permitthe weight to automaticallyv restore the belt guides to their ini- The same action is secured when the cover or screen is raised in order to secure access to the moving-parts of a machine.'
The starting and stopping of the machine and the application of the different speeds is controlled through the hand. lever while the latching bolt automatically seats in the sliding rod through thel tension of its connection so that whenever the parts are in driving position they are held under tension and ready to be releasedby any movement of the board or cover which would endanger the operator. It will therefore be seen that the lnvention presents a-simple and efficient construction by which a machine may be stopped by--a slight movement of the safety devices as the application of the tension means does not require any material pressure upon the'safety devices to automatically'release the tension to effect a shifting of the power.
