GRINDER AND POLISI-IER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 191(1).
Application filed. September 14, 1908. Serial No. 452,957.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE ADAM, citizen of the Republic of France, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinders and Polishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grinders and polishers and its object is to provide a simple and cheap device adapted to be applied to sewing machines or any light machinery used about the house for sharpening knives, scissors, razors, or other household articles as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings, where:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear end of a sewing machine showing the invention applied to the fly-wheel. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a side view of same.
The device consists of a ring 5 of rubber or other flexible substance with a flat periphery 6 and an interior annular groove 7 corresponding with the run of the fly wheel of the ordinary sewing machine. The flat periphery is adapted to carry a flexible band 8 having an outer grinding or polishing surface and it may be made of emery cloth, sand paper or leather prepared as a razor strop and which may be fitted on the ring before it is applied to the fly wheel or applied after the ring is sprung upon the wheel. The flexible nature of the ring readily permits of its being applied to the wheel and the interior edges of the groove hug the rounded periphery of the run so as to retain it against removal and prevent its slipping.
When the ring is located on the fly wheel and the proper grinding belt applied the treadle of the sewing machine may be operated and the wheel run at a high speed to do whatever grinding and polishing that may be needed about the household, and the belt 8 may be changed when necessary to provide for different grades of polishing or grinding means as the article to be treated may require.
This device forms a very convenient article for household use being exceedingly cheap and easily applied to the sewing machine and operated.
Vfhen the polishing and grinding belt becomes worn away a new one may be provided at a very small cost.
In locating the flexible ring in the flywheel the driving belt 9 is removed from the pulley 10 and the same is done when it is necessary to remove the ring.
It is obvious that the construction of the ring and the belts may be modified without departing from the essential features above described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a grinder and polisher; the combination with the balance wheel of a sewing machine, of a flexible ring having an interior groove to fit the wheel and an outer surface adapted to be provided with a grinding and polishing material.
2. In a grinder and polisher, the combination with the balance wheel of a sewing machine, of a ring of flexible material having an inner groove to fit the rim of the balance wheel and an outer flat surface and adapted to be sprung on the wheel, and a band with a polishing and grinding surface adapted to be fitted about the outer edge of the ring when it is fitted on the wheel.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 3d day of August A. D. 1908.
EMILE ADAM.
