Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented B131- 15. 1910i,
Application filed May 12, 1909'. Serial No. 495,544.
To all whom fit may concern."
lie it known that I, LAWRENCE C. S'riznnn,
a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and .St-ate of Pennsylvania, have inventeda new .and useful Improvement in Doubling Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to doubling mechanism Ifor use in the doubling of sheets of metal or' other 'material which may be conveniently doubled or folded by said machine.
IVhile my invention may have a wide 1- application the principal object. is to providea machine for the doubling of the packs hy means for raising and lowering said folding members.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1l isa longitudinal section of my improved doubling vmechanism; Fig. 2 is alikeview showing. the mechanism in position for doubling;`
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are end views of the machine in different positions; Fig. 6 is a plan view; and Fig. 7 is a detail.
The numeral 2 designates a suitable base or hed-plate which is preferably located below the Hoor-level 3 in order to bring the doubling table propel: iiush with the floorline. Pivoted to the lugs 4 on the bed-plate by means of the pivotal shafts or rods 5,
are. the arms G. The arms (3 are arranged onan incline or angle with reference to the lied-plate and the uppei' ends of said arms are pivoted by means of the pivotal rods 7 to the folding or doubling-members 8 of the table 9. The doubling-men'ibers 8 preferably consist of the solid plate-portions 10 and the lingers 11 projecting therefrom, the
doubling-members being arranged with irefci'eiice to tlze VHoor level sothat the fingers 11 will rest within the recesses l2 formed in the Afloor plates. In this manner the dou-v bling-table is made flush with the floor so that the packs can be moved directly from the floor onto the doubling-table withoutl interference. The doubling-members 8 ame hinged together by'nieans of the Arod v13 which passes through the lugs 14r on the doubling members 8. v
Supported onthe bed-plate 2 are the standards 15 and 16. These standards form the guides for the vertically movable frame 17. The frame 17 has the lugs 18 with the slots 1t) forniedn therein with which the hinged rod 13 engages. tain vertical pla-y on the part of the .frame vide for the raising and lowering of theverticlly moving frame 17 I employ a hydraunccted up to the cross-arm 22 of the frame plate 23. Iiroted to saidplate 23 is the divider or holder 24 with the dividin arm 25 carried thereby. IVhile I will re er to a divider, yet I wish it clearly understood that its further purpose is to hold the` sheet hereinafter set. forth. The divider 24 has the shoulder or notch 26 and the notch 27 the standard 16 1s adapted to engage. The
tion ily-means of the 'locking-member f30.` This locking-member has the shoulder 3l which is adapted to engage the notch 26 of nection with the manufacture of sheet'mctl,
"lic cylinder 2O whose plunger rod 21 is conl this device in the claims and specification as down during the doubling operation, as fully I dividing arm'2 is held in its upright posi.
the divider so as to hold the dividingarmw in its vertical position. This locking mem- IVhen my improved doubler is muse the pack 3T to be doubled where it is used in conis placed upon the table 9 as it comesfi'rorriz This allows for a cerv 17 withoutoperating the doubling-members as hereinafter fully, set forth. To pro- 17. Foi-ming part. of the frame 17 is thewith which a tripping pawl 28 pivoted toiojo ment.
-the frame descendsjthe lower end of the locln the rolls` and it is accurately adjusted on said table by means of the gages 38 which engage the edges of the pack along one Side. Vv'hen the pack has been properly' laid, upon the table the power is applied through the hydraulic cylinder to lower the frame 17.
As said frame is lowered 'the shoulder 27 on the divider 2li .moving in engagement with the pawl 28 throws the dividing arm out of engagement -with the locking-member 30e and the dividing arm falls by its own weight down onto the pack along the line' on which the pack .is to be doubled. rlhis initial descent of the frame 17 without moving the doubling members 8 oi the table is effected through the play given to said table by the slots 19. 1With the hingerod 13in engagement with the upper ends of the slots 19 a further downward movement of the frame will act on the hingerod 13 so as to cause the doublingmembers 8 to fold up into the position indicated in Fig. 2. The inclined lever-arms 6 act to force the doubling-members toward cach other on the `principle ofa toggle and a powerful force is l exerted to double the pack. The divic'ling,T arm remains in its horizontal position bearingl against the upper .face of the pack so as to prevent the pack from. rising and pern'iit the doubling members to double or fold the pack along 'the line of the dividw ingn v arm. The locking-member has. its shoulder 3l in engagement with the divii'ler when the arm 25 is lowered and said lock ing member acts to look said'arin in this position and secure it against upward move- Vsfhen the frame has almost reached the limit of its downward movement the doubling members will have doubled the pack to such an extent as to make the presy ence of the dividing` arnrunnecessary and provision is now made for withdrawing said arm before' thel doul'iling; is entirely completed. I, in releasing the dividing arm the loeking-membra' has dropped oi' its own weight the projection descending within l the slot in the plate Accordingly as ing member 30 comes in. Contact with the bed-plate 2 and the stud 35 on the divider l 2dis lowered until it strikes the lower end of the slot 34. The still further dowi'iward movement of the -frame with the pin in Contact .with the locking-member will act lo lift the dividing armv to its vertical. po l sition and where it is again engaged bythe l locking member to hold it in said position. I rlhe"(.loubline' members 8 have by this timer? been 'folded lto thefull extent and the pack y 3T has been doubled between said memliicrs. I '.lhe frame 'i7 is now raised bv the hydraulic l clvlini-l.' unil the doulilinelable!resumes its normal poslionfwhile ihelpawl Q8 airain engages the notch??? of the divider rlhe doubler pack 1s now removed from the table i ating; lho saine. a 'advancing and another pack is brought on when the operation just described is repeated.
B v my improved apparatus provide for the quick and accurate doubling of the packs, lthe lowering of the frame by the hydraulic cylinifler through the lever action ot the arm (3, giving a strong doubling movement with a minimum expenditure ol power. The dividing arm when lowered is securely locked against upward movement and iurnislies a strong resistance to the upward movement of the pack and at the same time `toi-ms a narrow knife-like bending edge so that the pack is brought close together along the bendiinqy line and uo further hammering' or other pressing of the puck along the line 'of bend is required after the pack is removed from the doubler. Furthermore, l provide for the withdrawal of the dividing arm before the doublimc` completed, but oni) when the presence of the dividingarm is not oi' 'further assistance.
