ENNIS C. HAINLINE, OF MOUNT STERLING, KENTUCKY.
STOCK-PEN FOR SCALES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1910.
Application filed November 6, 1909. Serial No. 526,543.
live stock may be confined upon the scale platform of the usual width and said scale may also be employed without disturbing the sides of the pen, to weigh wagons having projecting or overhanging sides, such as hay and produce wagons.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, taken through the uprights. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawings, the reference nuinerals 1 denote the usual longitudinal beams of a platform scale, upon which are mounted the planks 2, of which the central one and the end ones are extended somewhat at each side at 3 to receive and support the uprights 4. Supported from said uprights 1, by horizontal and diagonal braces 5, are exterior uprights 6, provided with any suitable longitudinal, transverse and diagonal braces 7. Suitable planking 8 fixed to uprights 4 and planking 9 fixed to uprights 6 form the sides of the pen to a suitable height, while horizontal planking 10 on top of uprights 4L and extending to uprights (3 serve as runways or platforms for the stockmen handling the cattle.
At each end I provide a gate 11 widened at its upper portion to close the space between uprights 6 above platforms l0 and narrowed at its lower portion to fit between uprights 4, said gate being carried by strap hinges 12 fixed to uprights 6 at one side and having the usual latch 13 at the other side.
In operation when the scale is to be used to weigh live stock, the latter are driven onto the platform in the usual manner and weighed, the width of said platform being that usually employed in scales of this character, wherein it is necessary that the same be not too wide, in order that the live stock may stand centrally thereon while being weighed. IVhen a wagon with overhanging sides is to be weighed, the gates 11 are opened and the wagon moved to position on the scale platform, the space above runways 1O accommodating the overhanging sides of said wagon, and thus dispensing with the necessity for removing the sides of the pen and at the same time maintaining the normal width of the scale platform.
It will be understood that the runways or platforms 1O afiord a convenient point from which the stockmen handling the cattle may brand the same after they have been weighed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stock pen for scales, embodying retaining sides disposed at their lower portions within the width of the scale platform and widened at their upper portions to permit the passage therebetween of wagons with overhung sides.
A stock pen for scales, embodying retaining sides disposed at their lower portions within the width of the scale platform and widened at their upper portions to permit the passage therebetween of wagons with overhung sides and end gates for said sides.
3. A stock pen for scales, embodying retaining sides disposed at their lower portions within the width of the scale platform and widened at their upper portions to permit the passage therebetween of wagons with overhung sides, and end gates shaped to conform to the configuration of said sides.
1. A stock pen for scales, embodying re taining sides disposed at their lower portions within the width of the scale platform and widened at their upper portions and intermediate horizontal platforms connecting said portions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ENNIS C. HAINLINE.
