To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM KRETZMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iron Heaters and Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifi cation.

This invention relates to a heating attachment for stoves or ranges, and is adapted to provide a plate or platform to fit into the openings of a stove, the edges resting on the edges of the opening and having a depressed portion to fitdown into the stove so as to bring the heating surface near to the re where it will be subjected to a more intense heat tha-n if it were the height of the lids from the lire, or the same heat can be secured by means of a smaller fire when this depressed structure is used.

The invention also provides a cover to fit over the plate to confine the heat to the depressed portion.

A further object of the invention is to furnish a device of this kind, the bottom of which is inclined so that it is adaptable to different sizes of stoves or ranges, in otherl words in a structure where the fire-brick comes up comparatively near the lids, the higher edge of the bottom portion being placed toward the draft so as not to interfere therewith.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a stove and a plate with its cover. Fig. 2 is a top view of the plate, and Fig. 3 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1, but with the cover removed.

The device is adapted to lit any ordinary make of stove or range 10 and when it is to be used the lids 11, with the center piece 1Q., are removed and a plate 13 is set down on the stove with its edges 111 bearing on the stove on the edges of the opening therein so as to support the plate and to make a tight lit sc as not to hinder the draft. The plate is provided with a depressed portion or well formed by the turned down portion of the plate forming ends 15 to which are secured the side pieces 16 and the bottom 17, either by riveting or any other form of securing, and the depth of this depression can be made to suit the wants, and the device can be used for heating sad-irons and also for cooking purposes, and a slower re can be used than when the lids are employed. This is partic ularly advantageous in the summer time, when with a small fire the irons can be heated or the food cooked, whereas in the absence of this device enough fire must be built `to heat the lids of the stove. This depressed portion of the plate is preferably made so as to bring it over the center of the fire-box 18, the sides of which are formed with the usual iirebrick 19.

I prefer to make the bottom as shown in Fig. 3, that is slanted .so that when the firebrick comes up fairly close to the top of the stove, as in this figure, the short side 20 of the depressed portion is placed toward the outlet of the draft so as not to interfere therewith, but if the fire-box was lower, the device could be turned about as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 3 and no excess draft would be caused. This makes a device adaptable to different sizes of stoves, and there is no danger of cutting off the draft by the insertion of this attachment. I can also use this plate in conjunction with a cover 21 which is made preferably oblong to fit the outlines of the depressed portion, and it sets on the top surface of the plate 13 whereby the heat is confined to the depressed portion and the heating is quicker and more thor ough than when the device is left open. A handle 22 is suitably placed so that the cover can be removed from the plate. This structure may be cast, but it is preferably made of sheet iron and stamped up into shape, thus making an economical device to manufacture.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A heating attachment for stoves comprising a plate adapted to have its edge rest on the edges of an opening in a stove, the plate being perforated in its center and having the material turned down to form the ends of a depressed heating portion, and a strip of metal secured to the plate at its ends and being depressed to form the side pieces and the bottom of the heating portion of which the turned down form the ends.

A heating attachment for stoves comprising a plate adapted to have its edge rest on the edges of an opening in a stove, portions ot the plate being turned down and having their ends slanted to form the end pieces of a depressed heating portion, and a strip of met-al secured to the plate and bent to form a slanted bottom and unequal sides of the heating portion of which the turned down portions of the plate form the ends.

A heating attachment for stoves comprising a plate adapted to have its edge rest on the edges of an opening in a stove, portions of the plate being turned down and having their ends slanted to form the end pieces of a depressed heating portion, a strip of metal secured to the plate and bent to form a slanted bottom and unequal sides of the heating portion of which the t-urned down portions of the plate form the ends, a cover to fit around the edges of the depressed portion and to cover the same to conportions of the plate fine the heat thereto. and a handle on the plate being perforated in its center and:

having the metal turned down to i'orln the ends of a depressed heating portion, and a strip of metal secured to the plate at its` ends and being depressed to inclose the ends of the depressed heating portion and the edges thereof, the ends of the strip being secured to the side edges of the plate adjacent to the perforation whereby the edges of the perforation are stitlened7 and a detachable cover with a handle thereon adapted to iii A over and inclose the heating portion.
