SCREEN FOR WELLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. DALI-IL, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Campo, in the county of Wharton and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens for Wells; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to well screens and particularly to that type used in connection with the pump tubes of deep water or oil wells.
The object of the invention is to provide an eflicient and cheaply constructed screen which will prevent foreign matter from being sucked into the pipe and thus damaging the pump piston and valves.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the screen attached to a pump tube; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a fragment of the wire wrapping employed.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 represents the pump tube which extends down into the well and is provided adjacent to its end with a series of apertures 2 adapted to permit the water or oil to pass from the well into the tube. These apertures are covered by peculiarly formed wire 3. This wire is preferably substantially triangular in shape with its inner edge squared, as at 4, so as to lie flat against the tube when wrapped there around. Triangular notches 5 are formed in the inner edge 4 so as to form openings for the water and to permit a free flow of the liquid up and down the casing or tube. The notches are preferably cut in to the wire about half an inch apart and the wire is wrapped around the casing either spirally or in separate rings and is attached thereto by strips of solder 6. This solder 6, is placed on the body in strips prior to Winding the strain wire or rings thereon.

Some suitable flux is also applied and when the wire has been all wound over the body,
enter rectangular notches in the wire so that the triangular notches will be alined over the apertures in the tube. The wire partially covers the holes 2 and forms therewith screening apertures which permit the ingress of water but excludes all foreign matter, such as stones and the like. By having the wire triangular in shape, it will be noticed that a considerable vertical flow may be obtained through the notches and yet have rather small spaces between the wires or between the turns of the wires as the case may be.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined 1n the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A device of the class described comprising a hollow body having a plurality of vertical parallel rows of apertures therein, a substantially triangular wire wrapped around said body and overlying the apertures with one of its edges lying adjacent the body, said edge being squared off and having triangular notches formed therein to reglster with the apertures, and strips of solder engaged with the notches in the wire and alternating with the apertures in the body so as to hold the wires with the triangular notches in vertical alinement.
