Writing` Machines, of which the following is' a specification.
This invention relates to the line-spacing mechanism of typewriting machines, and particularly to means for releasing the revoluble platen from the control of the usual line-space'wheel, so that the platen may be rotated while the line-space wheel remains stationary, for the usual purposes.`
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and elective construction for this purpose, which may be readily applied to existing forms of typewriting machines. y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the platen and art of the platen frame of an Underwood ont strike typewriting machine, showing my irnprove ments applied thereto. Fig. 2 shows in perspectiife the separate parts which are ineluded in the present invention. 'llhe usual revoluble platen 1 is xed by means of heads 2, 2 and screws 4 upon an axle 5, which is journaled in the ends 6 oit a platen frame and )rovided at one projecting end with a hand wheel 7 for turning the pklaten. Uponv the other projecting end of t e platen axle is carried a line-space wheel 8, held by a spring detent 9 provided upon the platen frame. VFixed to or-formed uponthe line-space wheel is a hub 10 whereby it is loosely mounted upon a collar l1,
the latter fixed upon the axle 5 and having at its .inner end a head 12 and at its outer end a threaded portion 13.
A hand wheel 14 similar to lf is provided with a hub 15, the inner end of which is .threaded at- 16 to screw upon the collar threads 13 and jam or bind the line-space Wheel against the head 12, so that the platen cannot turn independently of the linespace wheel. The hand-wheel 14. isnorlnally used thefor rotating theplaten and line-space wheel in the usual manner, but when it is desired to turn the platen independently of the linespace wheel, the operator grasps both hand wheels 7 and 14:, and turns the Wheel ll to the'left to release the line-space wheel.
The releasing movement ot' the hand wheel le is limited by a headed screw l?, which is threaded tightly into the end of the platen axle 5. `A washer 18 is loosely confined between the head of the screw and the outer end of the hub l5, the latter fixed `to the hand wheel le in any suitable way, as by to turn upon the threaded collar' 13 tar enough to relieve the pressure between the line-space wheel and the binding head'lQ. Usually about a quarter of a turn of the hand wheel will be found suliicent for this purpose. The 'washer 18 is keyed upon the end of theaxle (Fig. 3) so that the hand wheel lll may not be able to loosen the screw 17 two :dats or notches 20 being cut upon the end of the axle, and the washer having an approximately square hole as shown, to lit upon such notched end. rThe washer is therefore contined between the head ot' the screw and the shoulders formed by cutting the notches in the end of 'the axle. The hub l5 of the hand, wheel 14: has abore of small diameter at its outer end toI tit upon the end of the axle 5.
The device is found in practice t-o work satisfactorily when the working face of the binding head 12 is flat or in a plane at right angles to the axis ot' the linespace wheel.

Having thus described niy invention, I

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen hxed upon an axle journaled in a platen iran1e,o` a binding head fixed upon the axle and having a collar, a line-space wheel-l0ose upon said collar, a nut threaded upon the collar to 'force the line-space Wheel against the binding head, said nut fixed to a hand wheel capable ol turning the platen, a'heacled device in the forni of a screw threaded into the end o1 the platen axle, and a Washer keyed to 'the end of the platen axle and loosely confined between saidplaten axle andthe head ofthev screw, to permit slight inovenient or the hand-Wheel longitudinally of the platen axle.

Inv a typewriting machine, the. combination With a platen ixed to an axle, of a, binding head. and a threaded collar fixed upon the axle, a loose line-space Wheel contiguous to the binding head, a platen-revolving hand-wheel having a hub threaded at its inner end to screnT upon said threaded eollar to bind the line-space Wheel against said binding head, said hub fitting at its outer end upon Athe end of said axle, and a screw threaded into the end of said axle to conne the hand-Wheel thereon.

In a typewriting machine, the combina tion With a platen xed'to an axle, of a binding head and a. threaded collar fixed upon the axle, a loose line-space Wheel eontiguous to the binding head', a pla ten-revolving hand-Wheel having a hub threaded at its inner end to screw upon said threaded collar to bind the line-space wheel against said binding head, said hub litting at its outer end upon the end of saidaxle, and a screw threaded into the end oi said axle to conline the hand-wlieel thereon; provision being inade for permitting limited rotation of the hand Wheel to relieve the binding action upon the line-space wheel, to permit the platen to be rotated independently ol the latter.
