To cult whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that ll, JOHN F. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented a new and 11nproved Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
inning the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a construction which permits of an enlarged scope of adjustability in a belt; and to provide a buckle which is economical and simple in construction.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a buckle constructed in conformity with the present invention, being shown in conjunction with a belt strap; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1, the buckle being shown in its released position; Fig. 8 is a similar sectional View as Fig. 2, also taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, showing the buckle in its fastened position; and Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
The particular use to which the present invention is applied is as a buckle for belts. ln its use as a belt buckle the possibility of ornamentation of the exposed portion be comes a feature of advantage. ln the present instance the body portion of the buckle is formed from a solid plate, the outer surface of which is continuous and adapted to forni a surface for ornament-ation, such as engraving of initials, embossing, or producing repouss effects.
The body portion 5 has mounted on the inner' surface thereof a loop or shank 6 to which the buckle end 'T of a belt is secured by being passed through the loop, turned upon itself and sewed, as at 8. Near the end of the body portion 5 opposite to that having the loop (l, there is secured a guide 9. The guide 9 is formed of plate bar material and secured iiXedly to the said body portion 5 after being passed through slots 10, 10 formed in the sides of a sliding clamp 11. rlhe clamp 11 is constructed from plate metal and is provided with a tongue 12 which is, on three sides, severed from the body of the clamp 11, the forward edge thereof being struck down or depressed, as
shown substantially in Fig. 2 of the drawings. rlhe body portion of the clamp 11 is further provided with an upturned clip 13 by which the clamp is manipulated. The clamp 11 is formed, from a, tempered metal so that the tongue 12 is resilient or spring like in quality. rl`he extension of the tongue 12 from the body portion such that when the free end 14 of the belt is inserted between the clamp 11 and the body portion 5, the space remaining between the said belt and guide 9 is insufficient to pass the tongue l 12 and clamp 11 in the extended position of the said tongue. ln the endeavor to pass the clamp 11 and `belt end 14 under the guide 9, the tongue 12 is embedded slightly in the surface of the belt end 14.
The operation of the buckle, when secured to the belt as illustrated and as above described, is as follows: The ends 7 `and 14 are brought together, and the end 14 is threaded under the guide 9 and between the clamp 11 and body portion 5. The end 14 is passed through the loop 6 and to the outside of the opposite belt end. rlhe thumb or finger of the operator is then placed upon the clip 13 and depressed so that the edge of the tongue 12 is caused to contact with the belt end 14. lf the clamp 11 has been with drawn from under the guide 9 farther than need be, it may be retracted under the said guide before the tongue 12 is depressed upon the belt end 14. 'lthe pulling strain on the belt end 14 tends to draw backward the said belt end through the guide 9. ln this it is prevented by reason of the contact between the tongue 12 and the said belt end 14, which causes the said belt end to carry with it the clamp 11. In this endeavor it is prevented by reason of the fact that the extension of the tongue 12 below the body of the clamp 11 will not permit the clamp to pass farther within the guide 9. Should it not be desirable or convenient for the operator to manipulate with the fingers the clip 13, this will, in itself, be automatically provided for by reason of the fact that the body of the person upon which the belt is being placed will strike upon and advance the clip 13, by reason of the belt strain or tit to the person, sufficiently to seat the tongue 12 against the belt end 14. In this position the belt end 14 may be drawn as snugly as desired, the clamp 11 being lightly held in position. The adjustment of the belt end 14 through the buckle herein described is; vas will be seen, exceedingly close.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A buckle comprising a body portion, loops tixedly secured to said body portion and adapted to pass the free b-elt end; a clamp slidably attached to and adapted to extend under one of said loops having an extended portion to frictionally engage the said belt end between the said loops; and an extension of said clamp adapted to bear against the person of the wearer to rock the said clamp to engage the said belt.
2. A buckle comprising a body portion; loops ixedly secured to said body portion and adapted to pass the free belt end, one of said loops being provided to permanently receive the buckle end of a belt; a clamp slidably mounted upon the other of said loops having an extended portion to frictionally engage the said tree belt end between the said loops; and an extension of said clamp adapted to bear against the per son of the wearer to rock the said clamp to engage the said belt.
3. A buckle comprising a plate-like body portion; loops'iixedly secured to said body i portion and adaptedto pass the free belt i permanently aiy a belt; a clamp not engaged by the buckle end of a belt, said clamp having an integral tongue portion extended from the body portion of said clamp to impinge. upon and prevent the backward passage ot the said free belt end; and an extension of said clamp adapted to bear against the person of the wearer to rock the said clamp to engage the said belt.
