To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWARD ERMOLD, a citiZeno-f the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wiper Attachments for Bottle- Labeling Machines, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to an improved wiper attachment for bottle -labeling machines which relates more specifically to applying the body-labels to flat bottles or flasks used 111 bottling alcoholic liquors, so that the body-labels can be attached in a more re liable manner to the flasks with flat bodies than with the ordinary body-label wipers heretofore devised.
The attachment is more specifically adapted for use with the bottle-labeling machine for which Letters Patent were granted to me on June 1, 1909, No. 923,501; and the invention consists of the improved construction of body-label wipers and the mechanism for operating the same so that the wipers are passed over the rounded-0E ends of the flask orbottle after the label is applied to the flat portion of the body.
The invention consists further of certain details of construction which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front-elevation of my improved wiper attachment for body-labels of flasks and other fiat bottles, Fig. 2 is a side-elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3, 3, Fig. 2, showing the body-label wipers in the act of wiping the ends of the body-label on the rounded-ofl sides of a flask or other bottle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, a a represent the wipers for the body-labels. The wipers a are constructed in the well-known manner, of rubber plates or other elastic material, and are attached at their outer ends to holders I) by washers b and screw-bolts b". The shanks b of the holders Z) are applied at their lower ends to horizontal pivot-rods 12 which are supported at the upper ends of levers d. Short inwardly-extending lugs b are applied to the shanks b of the holders 6 and connected by helical springs s with hooks or eyes I) on the hubs d of the levers (Z so as to impart a yielding action on the pivoted holders of the body-label wipers and permit them to give sufliciently in outward direction when the body-label is applied to the flat body and rounded-off sides of the flask or bottle. The holders 6 for the wipers a are provided at their upper rearends, adjacent to the wipers, with antifriction rollers e which form contact with stationary inclined cams e havingvertical portions 6 extending downwardly below the inclined cam-portions. The inclined cams c are supported on and below the bottle-rest which is attached to a shank f that is held in fixed position on the frame of the bottlelabeling machine. The bottle-rest is provided with two laterally adjustable and rounded-off cheeks f that are supported on the bottle-rest proper so as to hold the flask or bottle in fixed position on the bottle-rest. The bottle-rest f is provided at its rear-end with an adjustable gage or stop f against which the bottom of the bottle abuts on being placed on the bottle-rest. The shank f of the gage or stop f is guided in a perforated lug at the rear-end of the bottle-rest and secured in position by a set-screw f passing through the side of the perforated lug and engaging the shank of the gage or stop in the usual manner. The hubs d of the levers d are pivoted to a transverse plate 9 at the upper end of a vertically guided sleeve 9 which is guided on a stationary upright guide-rod g on the supporting frame of the machine. To the plate g are also fulcrumed, in front of the levers cl, elbow-levers h, the upper ends of which are bent inwardly and provided with lugs h at right angles thereto, which lugs engage the upper ends of the levers d. The lugs h are connected by helical springs s with hooks or eyes h on the ends of the transverse plate 9, said springs pressing the lugs against the upper ends of the levers d and producing the inward motion of the same during the outward and upward motion of the levers. Vertically reciprocating motion is imparted to the sleeve 9 and plate 9 by an oscillating lever 9 which is operated from the cam-shaft of the bottlelabeling machine.
The elbow-levers h are provided with inwardly-extending arms k which are parallel with each other, and which are connected by a pivot-link h at their ends, so that the motion imparted to one of the elbow-levers it will be transmitted to the opposite lever. The apex of the angle of one of the wiperactuating elbow-levers h is connected by a pivot-link i with a second canr-lever i which is operated at the proper time from the cam-shaft. By this link and lever connection the body-wipers a are spread apart during their upward motion so as to clear the bottle-rest.
At the beginning of the downward motion, the body-wipers are moved inwardly over the ends of the label which is transmitted into proper position on the flat side of the flask or bottle by the pickers and presser-arm (not shown), after which the downward and outward motion of the wipers takes place by the cam and lever mechanism which actuates the guide-sleeve g and holders Z), so that the Wipers pass over the ends of the body-label and wipe them on the roundedoif sides of the flask or bottle, as shown in Figs 1 and 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination, with a stationary bottle-rest, of inclined cams below the same, body-label wipers, pivoted and spring-actuated holders for the same, antifriction rollers on the holders below said wipers adapted to pass over the inclined cams, levers pivotally connected ends with the holders, means for imparting vertically reciprocating motion to the wipersupportin'g mechanism, and means for imparting laterally reciprocating movement to the wipers and their actuating mechanism.

3. In a bottle-labeling machine, the combination, with a bottle-rest having sidecheeks, and inclined cams supported below the bottle-rest and extending beyond the cheeks, of body-label wipers spring-actuated holders for supporting t e same, antifrict-ion rollers on said holders in line with the cams, levers pivotally connected with the holders, spring-actuated elbow-levers engaging the holder-carrying levers at their upper ends, means for imparting Vertically reciprocating motion to said elbow-levers and holder carrying levers, and means for imparting laterally reciprocating motion to the Same;
