EXCELSIOR-CUTTING MACHINE.

Be it known that I, MOELMER STEXVART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City. in the county of Jackson and State of lviissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Excelsior- Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for cutting excelsior, and pertains to that class wherein a rotary cutter is em ployed to cut longitudinal strips from round blocks of wood held against the face of the cutter. The objection hereto-fore to the excelsior thus produced is that the strips are of different widths as it is obvious that they will become narrower as the diameter of the block diminishes. I overcome this objection by novel means which score the block longitudinally so that when the strips are cut therefrom they will be of uniform width.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple means for feeding the blocks to the cutter, so that this operation will require but little attention and may be performed without danger to the attendant.
A further object is to obtain double the capacity that has heretofore been had with machines of this character.
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and in order that it may be fully understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my machine on line I-I of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line II II of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention I employ a frame 1, provided with bearings 2 in which a shaft 3 is journaled.
4 designates a pulley fixed upon the shaft for driving the same.
5 designates a vertical rotary cutter consisting of a disk 6 and a plurality of radially-arranged knives 7, adjustably secured to the disk by set-screws 8. Cutter 5 is surrounded by a hood 9 for collecting the excelsior which is discharged through an opening 10 in the lower portion of the hood.
11 designates a stand arranged in front of the rotary cutter and provided with a pair of inclined chutes 12 for conducting the blocks of wood 13 to the cutter. Said chutes Specification of Letters Patent.

1 are arranged at opposite sides of the axis of the cutter so that the latter may simultaneously cut strips from two blocks and thus produce double the amount of excelsior in a given time as is cut by those machines which operate on but one block at a time. The chutes are of sufficient length to receive three or four blocks each, so that after they have been filled the machine will require no further attention until the last block in each chute rolls down into contact with the cutter. The sides 12" of the chutes extend down to within a short distance of the cutter so as to engage the lowermost blocks and prevent said cutter from moving the same longitudinally out of reach of the knives 7.
I score the peripheries of the blocks with a pair of horizontal scorers 1st having longitudinal peripheral blades 15, which enter the surfaces of the blocks to a depth slightly greater than the thickness of the strips cut therefrom. so that said strips will be divided into strands of uniform width. Scorers 14 are journald in stand 11 at the lower ends of the chute bottoms so that the lowermost blocks will rest thereon while in contact with the face of the rotary cutter.
By arranging one chute below the other, as shown in Fig. 1, the kindling or by-prodnot is reduced to a minimum, as the sticks which fall between the upper scorer and the rotary cutter will be caught and held between said cutter and the lowermost block on the under chute until it is nearly all cut into excelsior.
The blocks are constantly rotated to present a new surface to the cutter 5, this operation may be performed by applying power to the rotary scorers, and through them rotate the blocks, or the power may be applied to the blocks, in which case they will rotate the scorers.
In the drawings I have shown the scorers driven by sprocket gearing consisting of a sprocket-wheel 16, an endless sprocket-chain 17, and a sprocket-wheel 18, which latter is fixed to the shaft of the uppermost scorer, sprocket-wheel 16 being secured to a shaft 19 journaled in the lower portion of stand 1, and provided with tight and loose pulleys 20 21, respectively. The uppermost scorer drives the lowermost one through the intermediacy of sprocket-wheels 22 23 and an endless sprocket-chain 24, sprocket-Wheel 22 being fixed to the shaft of the uppermost scorer, While sprocket-Wheel 23 is fixed to the shaft of the lowermost one.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination, a vertical rotary cutter for cutting longitudinal strips from a block of Wood, inclined means down which said block is free to roll to the cutter, and a horizontal rotary scorer at the bottom of the inclined means and adjacent the face of the cutter, said scorer having longitudinal per-ipheral blades for scoring the block longitudinally.
2. In combination, a rotary cutter for cutting longitudinal strips from blocks of wood, a pair of inclined chutes for conducting the blocks to the face of the cutter at opposite sides of the axis thereof, one of said chutes being arranged beneath the other, a pair of rotary scorers journaled at the lower ends of the chutes for engaging and scoring the blocks longitudinally, and means for rotating said scorers.
