To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Dinner, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, county of Oklahoma, and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rail-joints, the object of the invention being the provision of a rail-joint which shall be inexpensive of production, eflicient and reliable in service, and strong and durable.
A further object of my invention is to provide a self contained rail-jont so constructed as to obviate the necessity of using the ordinary fish-plates and connecting bolts.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lfvith t-hese objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates one rail and Q the other. The cross sectional area of the rails are uniform and unchanged before the formation of the oint, no enlargement in the ails being required. The ends of the rails are formed into heads and head receiving sockets as will be described hereinafter so that when one rail is properly positioned it will fall into engagement with the other by gravity and be securely locked thereto.
The rail l is provided with a reduced portion 3 in the tread thereof, a head 4 being formed on said reduced portion, and a socket 5 is formed in the tread of the other rail to receive the portion 3 and head 4L as shown in the seve al figures. The rail 2 is provided with a reduced portion 6 in the tread thereof, and a head 7 similar to the head 4L is formed thereon. The aperture or socket 8 is formed to receive the head 7 as shown in Fig. 4t. The reduced portions 3 and o have inclined surfaces in order to provide the proper clearance between each other, these surfaces being contiguous when the joint is completed. The web 9 of the rail 2 recessed at 10 and a tongue 11 is formed on the web 19 of the rail 1 to engage this recessed portion, the height of said tongue being equal to the height of the web of the rail. Sockets 13 are formed in each flange of the rail 2 and reduced portions 14 having heads 15 in the rail l are adapted to engage these sockets. Lateral longitudinally extentfling lingers 10 are formed in the tread of the rail l and recessed portions 17 of the rail 2 are formed to receive said fingers.
lVhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described withont departing from my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Ilaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a rail joint, two rails, cach of which has a socket formed in the tread thereof adjacent their contiguous ends, a reduced portion in the tread of each 'ail terminating in a head, the said head on one rail being adapted to engage the said socket of the other, a socket formed in the llange of one rail, and a reduced extension and head formed in the flange of the other rail adapt` ed to engage said last named socket, substantally as described.
2. In a rail joint, two rails, each of which has a socket formed in the tread thereof adjacent their contiguous ends, a reduced portion in the tread of each rail terminating in a head, the said head on one rail being adapted to engage the said socketl of the other, a socket formed in each [lange of one rail, a reduced extension and head in each flange of the other rail adapted to engage said last named sockets, a recessed portion in the web of one 'ail, and a tongue in the web of the other rail adapted to engage said recessed portion, substantially as described.
3. In a rail joint, two rails, each of which has a socket formed in the tread thereof adjacent their contiguous ends, a reduced portion in the tread of each rail terminating in a head, the said head on one rail being adapted to engage the said socket of the other, a. socket formed in each flange of one rail, a reduced extension and head formed in each flange of the other rail adapted to engage said last named sockets, a recessed portion in the Web of one rail, a tongue in the web of the other rail adapted to engage said recessed portion, lateral longitudinally extending fingers formed in the tread of one rail, and recessed portions adapted to receive the latter formed in the other rail, substantially as described.
4. In al rail joint, two rails, each of Which has a socket formed in the tread thereof adjacent their contiguous ends, a reduced portion in the tread of' each rail terminating in a head, the said head on one rail being adapted to engage the said socket of the other, a socket formed in each flange of one rail, a reduced extension and head formed in each flange of the other rail adapted to engage said last named sockets, a recessed portion in the web of one rail, a tongue in the web of the other rail adapted to engage said recessed portion, lateral longitudinally extending fingers formed in the tread of one rail and recessed portions adapted to receive the latter formed in the other rail, said heads being substantially semi-circular in form, substantially as described.
5. In a rail joint, tWo rails, each of Which has a socket formed in the tread thereof adjacent their contiguous ends, a reduced portion in the tread of each rail terminating in a head, the said head on one rail being adapted to engage the said socket of the other rail, a socket formed in each flange of one rail, a
reduced extension and head formed in each flange of the other rail adapted to engage said last named sockets, a recessed portion in the web of one rail, a tongue in the Web of the other rail adapted to engage said recessed portion, lateral longitudinally extending fingers formed in the tread of one rail, and recessed portions adapted to receive the latter' formed in the other rail, said reduced portions having inclined surfaces, substantially as described. 6. In a rail joint, two rails, each of which has a socket formed in the tread thereofl adjacent their contiguous ends, a reduced portion in the tread of each rail terminating in a head, the said head on one rail being adapted to engage the said socket of the other rail, a sock-et formed in each flange of one rail, a reduced extension and head formed in each flange of the other rail adapted to engage said last named sockets, a recessed portion in the Web of one rail, a tongue in the Web of the other rail adapted to engage said recessed portion, lateral longitudinally extending fingers formed in the tread of one rail, and recessed portions adapted to receive the latter formed in the other rail, said reduced portions having inclined surfaces, the height of said tongue being substantially equal to the height of the rail web, substantially as described.
