To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. DALY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for Members of Building-Frames, &e.; of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide means for connecting the adjacent ends of two alined uprights constituting members of the frame workof a building, and for connecting with said uprights the ends of horizontal frame members.
'My invention is intended particnlarl for connecting upright and horizontal rame members which constitute the supports of piazza floors in apartment buildings, where each story above the'first has a piazza, the floor of whichconstitutes the roof of the piazza below it.
The invention is intended. to enable the upright frame members or supports to be conveniently coupled together end to end in such manner that they may be readily assembled and separated by horizontal sidewise movements, and to enable the horizontal members which support the piazza floor boards to be readily'eonnected to the up right members or supports.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim. 1'
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificatiom-Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a rame coupling embodying my invention, and portions of two upright and horizontal frame members en age therewith. Fig. 2 represents atop p an view of the coupling shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent, respectively,
a perspective view and an end view of ,a modification of my invention. Figs. 5 and 6 represent, respectively, a perspective view and an end view ofanother modification.
The same reference characters indicate the In carrying out my invention, I provide a frame coupling com osedv of three sides 10, 11, and 12, the si es 11 and 12 bein at right angles with the side 10,cand al cast. in a single piecez The coupling thus formed 1s open at one side to permit the lateral or horizontal insertion of alinedupight frame members 13 and 14. The 1n- .tcrior of the structure formed by the sides 10, 11, and 12 is provided with a transverse partition 15 located midwa between the ends of the coupling, and orming a stop for the ends of the frame members 13 and 14. holes for the reception of attaching screws 16. It will be seen that the sides 10, 11, and 12 and the partition 15 collectively form two alined SOCketSytllld that the frame members 13 and 14 may be assembled by simply slipping said members laterally into the sockets, one below and the other above the partition 15.
The described coupling is provided with lateral three-sided branches 17 for the reception of horizontal frame members 18, these being, for example, the sills or timbers which support the floor or roof boards. The branches 17 are cast integrally with the sides of the. main coupling,and may be The sides 11 and 12 are provided with formed on the sides 11 and 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2: or on the sides 10, 11, and 12,'as shown in: Figs. 3 and 4; or on the sides 10 and 12, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, according to the location of the coupling.
The open side of the main coupling is in,all cases arranged to face the exterior of the building, so that the upright frame members may be inserted and removed without interference with the fioor or roof hers.
The construction shown in Fig. 1 is intended for application to a center post. The construction sh'ownin Fig. 3 is intended for a center post which is adapted to support three horizontal frame members. The construction shown in Fig. 5 is intended for a corner post.
