Be it known that I, THAI) Sizes, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident ot' Audubon, Audubon county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Buggy-Boot Spring, of which the following is a speer tieation.
The object of my invention is to provide improved yielding pressure devices for holding a buggy boot in closed position.
further object ot this invention is to provide an improved construction for buggy boots and means :tor yielding by holding of same in closed position.
rt further object of this invention is to provide improved means for adjusting the tension or resilience ci yielding pressure devices employed ttor holding a buggy boot in closed position.
lli/1y invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the buggy body on the indicated line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is bottom plan of the boot and seat showing my improvement attached thereto.
In the construction of the device as shown, the numeral 10 designates a boot, preferably made of leather, imitation leather, canvas, or similar material, and provided with a stiitening frame 11 on its'side and rear margins. Longitudinal bars 12, 13 are fixed to the lower tace of the boot 10 and are curved or shaped as desired to give the proper pitch or inclination to the hoot in position. The inward marginal portion of the boot 10 is iixed to the upper margin of a cross bar 14, mounted transversely ot the buggy body 15, and said bar 14 and a bar 16 parallel therewith serve as supports for a seat 17. The seat 17 covers the inward portion of the boot 10 and may extend rearwardly therefrom. Ilthe side and rear marginal portions of the boot 10 containing the stitlening frame 11 rests on the top of the rear end and rear portions of the sides of the buggy body 15, and the bars or cleats 12, 13 extend into said buggy body. fr chain 18 is attached at each end to hooks 19, Q0, fixed to and projecting inward from the rear end portions of the cleats or bars 1Q, 13. The chain 18 preferably is flexed inwardly between the hooks 19, 20 and is detachably connected to said hooks so as to permit of adjustment or change in the degree oiE flexing. A retractile coil spring 21 is connected by a hook 22 on its rear end to the central portions of the chain 15% and extends inward therefrom across the central portion ot the bar 141, and is attached at its forward end to a hook 23, seated in and projecting downward from the central portion of the bar 16. A wear plate Q41-, preferably made oi metal, is mounted on the bar 1li and is adapted to be engaged by the spring 21, to prevent wearing ot' the said bar by the spring.
ln practical use the parts are assembled as shown and the tension ot the spring` 21 is adjusted by changing the degree of tiexure of the chain 18 to the desired extent. lVhen properly adjusted, the spring 21 will hold the boot closed against the top of the rear portion of the buggy body 15. llt/'hen the boot is opened, by manual force applied to the rear portion thereof in an upward direction, spring 21 is expanded and 'flexed across the bar 14; thus storing power in said spring, to return the boot to its seat when the lifting torce is removed.
