To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, JOHN Puoc'ron Ro- BINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Saba, in the county of San Saba and State of llexas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Scrapers, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rl`his invention relates to improvements in wheeled Scrapers or shovels of that class which are dumped by operating their shovel or scoop-like bodies.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive in construction and which will be effective in operation and easy to manipulate.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved wheeled scraper; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the scraper in its normal position in full lines and in its dumping position in dotted lines; Fie: 3 is a vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 8 8 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the arched axle; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of one side of the frame.
In the drawings 1 denotes a shovel or scoop-like body mounted to tilt upwardly and forwardly, said mounting being preferably effected by securing it in the downwardly arched or offset central portion 2 of a cross bar which forms the axle for two supporting wheels 3. rlhe ends of the bar or axle 2 project horizontally or outwardly in opposite directions to provide journals 41 on which the wheels 3 are mounted and from which also swings a frame 5. Said ends or journaled portions of the axle, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, are square in cross section and they have cylindrical portions 6 forming spindles for the wheels 3 and cylindrical portions 7 forming pivots for U-shaped hanger straps 8 which receive and are secured to the rear ends of side bars 9 of the frame 5. The forward portions of the side bars 9 are bent inwardly toward each other to provide spaced parallel front portions 10, between which latter is secured a draft tongue or pole 11. The frame also comprises a pair of upper side bars 12 disposed longitudinally above the rear portions of the side bars 9 and connected to the same by intermediate uprights 13 and upright portions 14 formed by bending the front ends of the upper side bars 12. Arranged upon the upper side bars 19. are hooks 15 with which are adjustably engaged chains 16 connected to the front ends of the side portions of the scoop body 1. These chains serve to limit the downward movement of the front scraping edge of the scoop or shovel and are adjustable so that the operation of the device may be readily controlled. The rear end of one of the upper side bars 12 is curved downwardly to provide a guide 17 for a hand lever 18, which latter' is fixed to the square or fiat faced portion of one of the ends of the axle 2 for the purpose of rotating the axle and hence tilting the scoop or shovel body 1. Said hand lever 18 has a recessed enlargement 19 on one side to engage and slide upon the curved guide 17, which latter is concentric with the journal portion of the axle and in said enlargement 19 is arranged a spring projected dog 2O to coact with rack teeth 21 formed upon the upper edge of the forward portion of the guide 17. A. retracting lever or bell crank 22 is pivoted, on the upper portion of the hand lever and connected to the pawl in the usual manner. If desired, a drivers seat 23 may be suitably mounted on the frame 5.
Then the machine is to be drawn by two draft animals a doubletree 241 is connected to the tongue 11 but when four animals are used the lead animals have their Vswingletrees 25 connected to draft chains or cables 26, which latter extend through guide eyes 27 on the side bars 9 and have hooks 28 which engage openings 29 in the axle 2 and the sides of the scoop or shovel 1, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.4 By connecting two of the draft animals to the machine in this manner, it will be seen that they pull from the bottom portion of the scraper.
In operation, assuming the parts to be in their normal position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, when it is desired to dump the shovel or scoo 3 1, it is only necessary to unlock the lever 1 and swing it rearwardly thereby throwing the scoop in an upward and forward direction to the dotted line position shown in said Fig. 2.
lVhile I have shown and described in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth since various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. In a machine of the character described, the colnbination of a frame, a downwardly arched or offset axle from which said frame swings, supporting wheels loosely mounted on said axle, a segmental guiding and locking rack on said frame concentric with said axle, a lever fixed to said axle and slidably engaged with said guide and a locking pawl carried by the lever to co-act with the rack. 2. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame having side bars with converging forward ends, a tongue connected to the latter, a downwardly offset or arched axle, hangers hingedly connecting the side bars of the frame to said axle supporting wheels upon the ends of said axle, a scoop upon the arched central portion of the axle, a dumping lever connected to said axle, guides upon the forward portions of the side bars and flexible draft elements arranged in said guides and having their rear ends connected to the scoop.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a downwardly arched or offset axle, from the end portions of which said frame swings, supporting wheels rotatably mounted on the extremities of said axle, a scoop fixed to the offset portion of the axle, an upright hand lever fixed to one end of said axle, a segmental rack on the frame concentric with said lever,
and a pawl carried by the lever for engagement with said rack.

In a. machine of the character described, the combination of a U-shaped frame consisting of parallel lower side bars having forwardly converging ends united to a draft tongue, upper side bars having depending forward ends secured to the lower side bars, one of theupper side bars having its rear portion downwardly curved and formed with ratchet teeth, standards uniting the rear portions of the upper side bars to the lower side bars, and a transversely disposed seat-carrying bar uniting the forward portions of the upper side bars, a downwardly arched or offset axle mounted in bearings on the rear ends of the lower side bars, supporting wheels rotatable on the extremities of said axle, a scoop fixed to the ollset portion of the axle, a flexible element between the frame and scoop to limit the swinging movement of the latter, an upright hand lever fixed to one end of the axle, and a pawl carried by sai-d lever for engagement with said ratchet teeth.
