CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 4, 1909. Serial No. 500,210.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PARIS BAR- CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns for the making of butter, and my improvements consist of novel arrangement of parts and adaptation thereof; and the object of my invention is to provide a churn that will be efficient in operation, easily driven, and continuous and uniform in ac tion when in service.
To attain these ends the invention consists in the combination of parts as shown by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, shows an interior view of the churn with its dashers, and means for rotating the same. Fig. 2, shows an exterior elevation of the churn. Fig. 8, shows a sectional view of the churn body or receptacle, and position of the dashers with each other. Fig. 4, shows an exterior and plan view of the churn from above.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The churn receptacle a, is provided with two removable dashers F, pivoted with the cover 7) and the bottom a of the churn. The dashers F are preferably made of wood, and each dasher consists of a vertical stem 7, provided with cross pieces f that take through the said stems, the cross pieces f of each dasher being set alternately at right angles with each other, and the dashers F are so set with one another, that their cross pieces 7 are free to pass each other when the dashers are caused to rotate.
The churn cover 6, has mounted upon it and pivoted therefrom three small gear wheels 11, i, and 70, that mesh with each other, and formed with the hub of the gear wheel is, is a pulley d ada ted for a rope. The churn cover is also urther provided with two rope pulleys e, c, pivoted from a bracket Z2 projecting from the cover 6, and at the side of the churn receptacle is a rope pulley 0, that is pivoted from a pivot stem j,
fitted to the bracket j. The bracket 7', is formed with a V-shaped recess to hold and secure the pivot stem j to the bracket The wheel 0, is provided with a handle 0, through which the wheel 0 can be rotated.
The brakes 7b, of the churn are of wood, and are secured to the churn by any suitable means.
The different parts of the churn having been described, the operation of the same is as follows :--The dashers F, of the churn are rotated by means of the gear wheels 2', i, meshing with the gear wheel 70, that is caused to rotate when the rope pulley (Z is acted upon by the transmission rope 1", taking over the pulleys e, e and around the main drive pulley c, and which is provided with a handle c for rotating the same, and is the means of transferring a vertical revolving motion of the drive wheel 0, to a horizontal revolving motion of the gear wheels pivoted from the churn cover, so that the dashers F are caused to so rotate, that the milk in the churn receptacle is violently agitated by the circular movement in opposite directions of the arms or cross pieces of the dashers F.
The churn receptacle, as shown, is of a cylindrical form, but the oval form of churn receptacle is as well adapted for the dashers and driving mechanism as the cylindrical shape and the oval form is preferred for cer tain sizes of churns, and it is only a matter of size of the churn which style of churn receptacle is used.
Having described my invention, I claim A churn receptacle cover, formed with a projecting bracket with pulleys pivoted thereto, and a centrally pivoted pulley with a gear wheel meshing into gear wheels pivoted with churn dashers, in combination with a transmission rope and a drive ulley with a pivot stem adjustably arranged to a bracket secured to the side of the churn body.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM PARIS BARCLAY.
