Be it known that I, JOHN F. MASTERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Durham, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flooring, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to an improvement in flooring, and particularly to a construction whereby hard wood floors may be quickly and tively little trouble and expense.

My invention consists primarily in a series of sections of flooring, each section composed of a number of boards permanently held together, and provided with permanent means secured thereto for the attachment of a succeeding section.

Further, it consists of the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.

In the drawings, A represents the sections of which the flooring is composed. Each section consists of a series of boards or planks a, arranged edge to edge. The boards are held together to form the sections, by meansof threaded bolts or screws Z), which passtransversely through one of the outer side boards, through the intermediate boards, and are threaded into the opposite outer side board of the section.

In order that the sections may be secured together, I have provided each section with a transverse opening which extends entirely through said section, and is adapted to receive a threaded bolt 0. and 4, the board adjacent the outer boards in one section, is cut away to form a recess to receive a nut d. This recess is located in line with the opening through the adjacent sections, and a similar opening is made through securely laid with compara-.

It will be seen therefore, that the threaded bolts or screws 6, serve to secure boards together, to form a section, and the threaded bolts 0, not only serve to hold the sections together, but also aid in holding the boards together of the section through which they pass.

Instead of the nut d, an elongated hollow headed boltmay be used and embedded in the section, adjacent the edge thereof. In

Fig. 5, I have shown a modification in which the hollow headed bolts are used, and the threaded bolts 0, are screwed into the same.

On the under side of each section, adjacent the ends thereof, are renforcing strips B. Said strips are preferably secured'to the section crosswise the board, and beneath the securing bolts, so as to strengthen the section, and especially at the point where it:

may be weakened by reason of the openings through which the bolts pass.

Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A floor comprising a series of sections adapted to be secured together, each section being formed of a series of boards arranged edge to edge, fastening bolts for securing the boards together in each section, said fastening bolts extending through the outer board at one side of the section, through the intermediate boards, and being threaded into the outer board at the opposlte side of said section, threaded bolts passing entirely through one of said sections and into the. adjacentsection, and nuts embedded in said adjacent section into which said last named bolts are threaded. p

2.
