WILLIS W. BAILEY, 0F GHADWIGK, II LINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 18, 1910.
Application filed February 6, 1908. Serial No. 414,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS IV. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chadwick, in the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Post'Forming Molds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for making concrete fence or other posts and has for its object to produce a device for the purpose set forth which shall be simple, cheap and one which will produce a smoothly finished post.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a post forming device or mold which will permit of a post being formed in a somewhat wet condition and one in which the act of removal of the side walls of the mold will cause a troweling action and produce a smooth finish to the sides of the finished post.
My invention consists further in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanving drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mold arranged preparatory to filling with concrete. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the molded post and mode of removing the mold from the post. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the front end block.
In carrying out my invention I use generally a smooth pallet or base board A upon which is placed the mold proper consisting of the side walls B, the rear end block C and the front end block D; the rear end block C is wider than the front block D, and has lugs 0 to which are h nged or de tachably secured, the side walls by means of the flanges 7) and the pins E. As the front block D is narrower than the rear block the side walls converge to the front and inclose the said front block D which is substantially triangular in shape except that the inner vertical wall D is rounded to form a rest for the small end of the post; the front end block D is provided on its lower face with the lugs d which are to fit in recesses or holes a in the pallet A so that said block D can have no horizontal movement but remains stationary at all times. The side walls converge as has beenstated and are pivotally secured together at their meeting point the inner faces being formed to conform to the triangular shape of the front block D, and they are provided with lugs Z2 through which passes a pin F having aneye f. by means of which the entire mold can be drawn forward when removing same from the newly formed post, the lugs b and pin F forming a hinge joint.
To use my device the pallet A is placedon any smoothsurface; the front end block D is then placed within the smaller end of the mold, the lugs d fitting the recesses or holes a, the rear end block C having been locked in place by the pins E. The mold is now filled with concrete and tamped thoroughly; it may be removed immediately or the concrete may be left a short time to set; to remove the mold the larger end of the mold is opened by removing the pins E so that the end block C can be swung away or entirely. removed; the mold is now pulled forward by force applied to the front or smaller end; the front block I) remains stationary and supports the front end of the post which has just been formed and with the post said front block remains on the pallet A; the
mold is pulled alongside the post with a slid If desired the mold can be used without the pallet A for instance on a hard surface such as a cement floor; when this is done the lugs d are not needed, but the block D must be held immovably to the floor so that it cannot move when the sides of the mold are slid forwardly.
It will thus be seen that'I produce a very simple mold which consists of few parts and by use of which a smooth sided concrete post can be quickly made.
I claim:
1'. A moldfor forming plastic posts consisting of a removable rear block having perforated ears projecting laterally therefrom, side walls havingperforated lugs projecting from their outer faces, removable pins adapts ed to pass through the aforesaidears and i lugs when in alinement detachablyconnectp ing the rear block and the side Walls, said lugs, said pin having an eye at its upper end and serving the double purpose of a fastenmg for the front ends of the side walls and as a means for drawing forwardly the side walls when the rear end block is detached from the said side walls.
2. A mold for forming plastic blocks consisting of a pallet or baseboard, a removable rear block having perforated ears projecting laterally therefrom, side walls having perforated lugs projecting from their outer faces, pins adapted to pass through the aforesaid ears and lugs when in alinement pivotally connecting the rear block and side walls, said side walls converging forwardly and meeting at their front ends, said forward ends provided with. perforated interlocking lugs, a pin passed through said interlocking lugs, said pin having an eye at its upper end serving the double purpose of a fastening for the front ends of the side walls and as a means for drawing forwardly the side walls when the rear end block is detached from the said side walls, and a tapering front block adapted to be held between the converging front ends of the side walls.
