T o all'wiom it may concern:
'Beit known thatiI, FRANK LowRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steubenville, in thefounty of, Jefferson 'and -Statelof Ohiol have `invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop -Feed Lubricators, of' which the following is a f speciiication.A l i Y A The invention relates to a steam-actuated 'L0 lubricator'desi'giied and intended to be connected with a ste'ain line supplying the steam chest and valves ofen engine; and the object of' the invention is to provide a lubricater which will .heat and lfeed grease, as
1`5 well as normally liquid oil', into the supplyline 'under all conditions lof temperature,
and also the-heated Condition and vaporized forni whicliare lnecessary for inost eili- .ciently lubricating all the parts of the en-` ^gine. i y l y y ,y 1 In lubricators of-'tliisfcliiss'5 diiculty has been experiencedin heatiiig'the grease and maintaining it in the proper'temperature for working, and also inl preventing afreezin@ diiculties arise 'trom the use of Asight-feed .lines which the drop ofliquid grease or oil is required ,to forni lor rise in a collecting-chamber containingwatenffor the rea- '30 son that unless the water is constantly inaiiitained at vor replenished to the overflow line,
the 'grease cannot leave the lianiber, but re- `mains on the surface thereof and soinetiines c mixeswith and discolors the water. This difficulty is accentuated in traction and otherl engines subject to sudden jars and excessive vibrations, which tend to agitate the water and also to throw the saine out of the collect- @ing-chambeif. .These more general difficul- -flo ties are overconie and other ancillary advantages are attained bythe construction and rangement ,shown for'a preferred embodi- 1 4,nfient of the invention in the accom leanyiiig `zdriivifin'g,l foriniiig part hereof, in which Figure 1 Ais iiside elevation vof the 11nfprov'ed lubricatoih Figa 2,asiiii'ilar view in i Section'f; and Fig.1 3,;'a 'fragmentary section Showing a modified l'orin and arrangement ofthe steain'nipple.
i' throughout 'the-drawing. The lcase 1 of thelubrieator is preferably inade square orrec'tangular in forni, 'with the lillingv plug'2 inthe middle of the top or thickeninm of the grease. Further refer "to similar :parts and the drain valve Sin the inddle of the bottom. The steam-pipe 4 is connected to the supply-line, not shown', at a4 convenient .point above the liibi'icatoi", and is provided with the three-way tittiiizg- 5 on its lower end. The condensing-pipe (3 is connected to one branch of this litting andthe heatingpipe 7 tothe other branch thereof7 whence tended downward and enter the reservoir through the lpei-tunes 8 and 8, preferably located on opposite sides in thetop of the case. v
The condensing-pipe (S is preferably provided 'with the controllingvalve 9, and this pipe extends downward through the reservoir and opens in the bottoin portion thereof; while the heating-pipe is. preferably obstructed as at 10,*in its upper end, and is likewise entended downward through t-lie cavity of the i'escr-voirand 4connects 'with the condensing and heating pipes are exthe elbow 11 fornied or attached inside the case preferably iieaij.l the. bottoni thereof, which elbow-is provided '.'wt-ha channel 12 coniniunicating'gv V'above 'with' the Aheating-pipe and opening outward- Ithrough the sidl wall of the case.
The sight-feed line composed of the sight-glass 13 mounted and coniii'iuiiicating between the valve-fitting 14 and the collecting-chamber 15, respectively'formed or at` Isteam nipple 17 which pre'l'oifalfily lciiiiinatos inside the lower end of thesight-glass and discharges directly across the line of the-saine and iiito and along .the 'feed-pipo towai'dthe supply-line. ,Fhei'eed-pipe 15 :t'oi'ined oratlached on the collecting- -.chainber 1 5 and is virtually a: lateral continuation llieieol, and this pipe extends to and communicates vwith tlieengine supply -line-.U By this construction and Kri'angcinentLthe oil oi'gieasej in thereseifvoir will be vproperly `heated by the livesleain which passesthrough the heating-pipe, and by reason'of the water whichaccumulates 41n the bottoni ofthereservoir lroin the condensing-pipe, the vliquid grease passes out' cieutly lubricat'eall parts of the en ine.
lt is evidently not essential that te steam nipple shallterininate inside the lower end of the-sight-glass for it may be extended beyond the saine asin the modilied form 17 shown in F 1g. 3', in Wlncn event the suction caused by the hot discharge serves to siphon .the dropping .grease along the leed-pipe until the saine passes in front of thel nipple, whence it is sprayed into the supply-line as before; but the shorter vni plc forni of the device is preferred for t e reasonthat each dropof .grease is more 5 forcefully and .directly nnpinged as it falls freely into the hot steam discharge and is therefore more positively and certainly heated and atoinized,
