E. WITZENMANN. MACHINE PoR ARMORING CABLES. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 10, 1908.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
NITED STATES To all 'whom it mayu'lconcem:
i the ,follo'wingis' speci PATENT ormoni.
'EMIL wrrznniuarin, or PFORZHEIM, GERMANY.
MACHINE ron Amaonme CABLES. l
4Be it known .that I, EM'IL Wr'rzENMANN,
' inanufacturenja subject ofthe Grand Duke A of. Baden, residing strasse, Pforzheinn` German Empire, have invented new. and `useful Improvements in at No, 48 l-'lolzgarten-l Cables', of .which cation,
Machines fory Armorin -The subject of'rny invention is a machine tape of suitablecross section, fed'to the cable bymeans of the rollers of the sci-called Wlnd-` 'the time being l jming-head ofthe 'for 'armoring cables with metallic hose: vAccording to. my 'invention thej cableis fedfrorn a delivery'freelto a windingreel in well known'manner, l and the piece of cable for lying between the two reels, and-'about to 'be "armored, is rotated on .its longitudinalaxis. At the same time .al metal machine, is coiled around the cable bythe saidhead being causedto travel along. the .machine inl they direction of the length vof the cable.
A and, secondly, of tapewi'riding-ro 1ers whose 'carriers are .'unifortnlrotation of The essential feature of the invention is theprovision, firstly, chucks'for'- holding taut the portion of the cable' which -is incourse-ofbein armored,
resiliently mounted inf the windin -head-and are actuated by pressure.
. he clamping devices insure correct and the cablej'being armored vwith if FOne formo in which- 'entllyl mounted, carriersof` the rollers, actuated by pressure, enable `the rollers to adapt` Figure'il'- is an elevation ofthe entire nia- 1: chine, Fi-g. .2 an elevation and part section of the4 .winding-head, and Fig. 3 an elevation invention.
A ery- -and'winding-- reels b b respectively, are 1 and -part section of a fragment of cable armored with metallic hose according tothis -The frames c c" forsiipporting the delivmounted in well-known manner 1n the stand-y ards a' a and at'a. vThese frames can be rotated at right angles to the axesof rotation-` ,fof the reels.

i rollers t* can adapt themse y to any irregularities in the tape being woun whereby firm pressing of the tape against the -I Sp ecicatiou of Letters Patent. `PainigqgdJan, 11 lgju), f. Appncauo'n aiea'nvember 1o, isos. serial No. 461,958..
which is connected by the chain g with the sprocket-wheel h ofa shaft z', whose other end has Amounted on it another sprocket wheell j, connected b a chain Z:v with a sprocket wheel m carried by vthe trunnion e', of the other frame c. By means of step ed pulley l both frames are thus ro'- tate in the same direction.`
The c'able n is fed from the delivery-reel b. through the hollow trunnion o ofthe frame ,'thence through a hole in the winding-head p, which slides on the bed a2, ther through the hollow 'trunnion oof the .frame o to the winding-reel b. Spring-actuated pins 'g g arey provided'for the purpose of preventing unintentional rotation 'of the reels ontheir own axes during the winding- The hollow trumnonsy o o carry clampingheads or`chucks r 'r,whose jaws as can be approachedtoand retractedfrom each other in any desired manner. By means of these jaws the piece of cable' yn which for the time being' lies between the chucks r 1" is lkept taut.A On rotation of the frames c c by means ofthe stepped pulley d, the chucks 1' r', and thus the piece of cable stretched between them, are rotated in like direction.
The members ,'which carry the rollersy t* of the windinghead p (Figs. 1 and 2), are somounted as to yield in radial direction, :and 'are kept 'under uniform ressure. For `this purpose the winding-hea p is provided with Vthree housings u, constituting cylin ders, in which slide the rods t having heads "v (Fig. 2). The housings u are closed by screw-caps lLa/and between thelatter and the heads 'v there are located coiled springs e', which lalways have the tendency to force the rods t toward the head' p.
As 1s obvious, the carrier-members rollers 15; will always act under the influence 'of yielding pressure, which can be regulated by means of the screw-ca s lw, so that the ves automatically t. of the IVcable is insured. I
f 'In order `toarmor the cable, the portion between the chucks 1' a" must first be drawn taut andixed by tightening the latter, and they winding-head p brought into the posi'- tion shown in Fig. 1.' On startin the machine, in consequence of the 4win ng-head traveling'along the bede?, in the direction the and then farof the arrow (Fig. l), the tape a (not shown in Fig. l) ruiming in between the rollers t* of the winding-head p, will be wound in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3, until the winding-head reaches the chuck r. Hereupon the two chucks 1^ r are loosened and the now armored piece of cable rolled up on the reel b. The winding-head p can now be returned into its initial position` ready for armoring the next piece of cable, which now lies between the two chucks, in the Same manner as before.
It will be clear that the machine can also be employed for armoring in addtion to cables, any other objects presenting the character of a rope or the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new:
l. The combination, in a machine for armoring cables and the like with metallic hose, of cable delivery and receiving reels, trunnions for supporting said reels, a sliding metal tape winding-head located between said trumnons, and rollers mounted resiliently on the winding head so as to yield in a radial direction.
2. The combination, in a machine for arinoring cables and the like with metallic hose, of cable delivery and receiving reels, trunnions for supporting said reels, means carried by the trunnions for clamping the taut cable between said reels, a sliding metal tape winding-head loeated.between said clamping means, and rollers lmounted resiliently on the winding head 'so as to yield in a radial direction.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 21st day of October 1908, in
the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL VVITZENMANN.
